Hi friends, I am back with a quiz. And this time, the topic is my favourite – music and of the greatest music composers of all times Rahul Dev Burman.

I recently read a book about Pancham and am writing this quiz as a precursor to writing a review on the book. I hope you find the quiz interesting enough to participate.

Q1) S D Burman’s father should have become a King, but missed out as the court coterie preferred his uncle over him. If his father had become the King, then Bollywood would have missed both SD & RD. Do you know which was the royal family/kingdom to which the Burmans belonged?

Q2) It is well-known that RD Burman was called Pancham, because as a child he used to cry in Pancham (fifth note Pa). But RDB had another nickname, by which he was known to friends and family, do you know what this nickname is?

Q3) Apart from assisting SD Burman, Pancham also played an instrument and played in many hit songs. Do you know which instrument is this?

Q4) A hit movie had a hit song, which had five versions – all to be sung by Rafi. But RDB pleaded with the legendary Nasir Hussain to give one version for Kishore. He agreed and the Kishore version became a big hit. Do you know which famous song is this?

Q5) One of RDB’s most famous song is the Asha Bhosle song Dum Maro Dum. But initially this song was meant to be a duet sung by two other singers, do you know who?

Q6) RDB had a very good relation with Mehmood who gave him his first break (Chote Nawab). One of their successful collaborations was Bombay to Goa, which played a very important role in Amitabh’s career. But Amitabh was not Mehmood’s first choice for the hero, it was someone else from a different field, any idea who this person was?

Q7) This was one of RDB’s most famous songs from a super hit movie. But the song became controversial and there was an uncharitable rumour that after hearing this song, SD Burman was so shocked, that he had a stroke, which subsequently lead to his death. This rumour was of course untrue, but can you identify this famous song.

Q8) RDB composed a very famous song and Kishore Kumar was not ready to sing it as he felt that this classical number was extremely difficult. So a compromise was reached – first the version of the same song was recorded by Lata. Then Kishore listened to the song day and night for 7 days and learnt it by heart and gave a perfect rendition, creating yet another hit song. Can you identify this song based on Raga Shivranjini?

Q9) Despite his revolutionary music, the Filmfare award eluded Pancham for a very long time. Do you know which was the first movie for which he won the Filmfare award?

Q10) Three top heroes launched their sons as heroes and all chose RD Burman as the composer and he proved them right delivering super hit songs. Can you identify the three top heroes and their children?
