There is a SMS joke which says “100 me 99 beiman, phir bhi mera Bharat mahan”.
Isn’t this true? Our country has all the problems of the world – crooked leaders, corruption, terrorism, poverty, inflation, floods, starvation – you name the problem and it is in India. But inspite of all that, we love our country so much! Indians who go abroad and enjoy the luxurious life there, also want to come back to the motherland they love!! Why is this so?
This is because our country is like our mother, and whether our mother is ugly, poor or ill, we will always love her. Similarly, we will always love our motherland. We do love our country, but we love it more on special days like Independence Day.
On this the 64th Independence day of our country, patriotism is the need of the hour. More so, because of the blatant corruption everywhere. So on this blessed day, let us remember those who gave their lives so that we could live in a free country.
Happy Independence Day!! This is my musical tribute to my country, through ten famous patriotic songs.
1) Sujalam Suphalam Malayajashitalam
Sasyashyamalam Mataram..Vande Mataram
The national song of India is the first we remember, the song which inspired our freedom movement. This is from the movie Anand Math (1952) and the song is by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. Music is by Hemant Kumar and the song is immortalized by the voice of India, Lata Mangeshkar. This song was been criticised by some as being representative of militant Hinduism, there is nothing further from the truth than this. This song and movie is based on the Sanyasi rebellion of the late 1700s when Hindu sanyasis and Muslim fakirs joined hands to take on the East India Company.

Hum Hindustani Hum Hindustani
This song from Hum Hindustani (1960) is sung by Mukesh, lyrics by Prem Dhawan and music by Usha Khanna. This is the best song in this category. Picturised on Sunil Dutt, the song shows various facets of the country - Congress session presided by Nehru, our armed forces, the farmers, temples, mosques, and the modern temples – factories and dams. The message of this song is great – leave aside the past and move ahead to progress.

On 26th January 1963, a live performance of this song in Delhi by Lata moved Nehru to tears. Even today, there will be very few dry eyes when one hears this song.

I end this review with the national anthem, the song to which all of us rise in respect. Rabindranath Tagore’s epic song is probably the song which almost all Indians know by heart. It is always a thrill to listen to the national anthem.
