Safety at Home (Part-2)

This is the continuation of the part 1. This article is not posted in the right category because MS could not include this topic. But I want to share information / knowledge with you. As I have said earlier this is part of the document that I have shared with many other people in different places.

According to the statistics, out of 330 incidents

300 are Near-Miss Accidents – No injury but someone escaped an accident (may be fatal) with / without loss of property

29 Accidents– One or more are injured with / without loss of property

01 Fatal Accident– A fatal accident with or without loss of property. However, remember a fatal accident may be the first one of the 330 incidents. So it is advised to take enough care to prevent even near-miss accident.

We really do not bother about Near-Miss accidents. These are actually early warnings. It is important to educate people at home about such hazards.

We stores lot of hazards at our residence and such hazards are unknown to many of us. Any modern kitchen with too many gadgets is full of hazards. So it is essential to take care of devices we use.

LPG fired cooking range or similar equipments need some attention for better performance and safety of users. Not at all time consuming or difficult but needs some change in attitude. We should neither ignore safety of people around nor refrain from not educating them. My Checklist -

Cleaning –

  1. Nozzles of the burner should be cleaned at a regular interval with a poker designed for this work. Cleaning once in a month should be enough but it all depends on the usage of the particular stove. Burner should be cleaned if there is any overflow of material on it.

  2. A clean piece of equipment in the kitchen creates an impression. Wipe by wet cloths twice in a day should be sufficient.

Rubber Tube – Only approved rubber tube should be used and better to replace it once in a year. Please see to it that rubber tube is not exposed to any hot surface or utensils.

Joints – Any cooking range will be having lot of joints. It is important to get this joints tested once in a year by an authorized LPG Dealer. LPG has distinct smell so any leakage can be detected easily. In such case, close the main supply valve and get the equipment inspected and repaired by approved technician.

Valve on the bottle – We are not suppose to temper it or repair it. Get it checked by the dealer if you have any doubt.

Regulators – There may be four to five burners and everyone will have separate regulator. It is extremely dangerous if one of the regulators is leaking. In such case close the main valve and get the leaking one repaired or replaced.

Do not try to repair or replace any part if you are do not have that kind of skill.

Hygiene – Not a big issue in case of LPG fired cooking range but regular cleaning is must. Grill section may require some attention. Kitchen should be as clean as any other part of the house.

Please let me know if I have missed something.

Electrical / Laser / Microwave

-----------------------------------

Because of limitation, I do not want to repeat the same thing that I have mentioned in some of my other reviews. Please follow the links, if you are interested.

https://mouthshut.com/readreview/21098-1.html - Electrical and Laser

Important - Always use three pin plug for your electrical items like Water Heaters, Fridge, Iron, Washing Machine etc. Please get it checked continuity of earthing / grounding by a skilled electrician.

Fire Hazard

-------------

We cannot of civilization without fire. We have to live with this hazard but we can surly take enough precautions to protect property and also to save loved one.

Someone may find it difficult to understand but let me try to explain. There can be fire if there are Fuel (the combustible), Heat (may be due to friction, spark, flame) and Oxygen (from air). In absence of anyone of these, there cannot be fire. We call it Fire Triangle. So best way to Prevent or Fight fire is to isolate / remove anyone of these three component.

What to do incase of an unwanted fire?

First action is to Save Life.

In case of a small fire in the kitchen or elsewhere in the house (OTHER THAN ELECTRICAL)

  1. Protect you, kids, elderly persons, and pets. Property can be purchased but not the lives. Please remember, you cannot help others if you are injured.

  2. Raise alarm to get help. Its better to call Fire Brigade if you are not trained enough to extinguish fire. Take help of experienced persons.

  3. Try to cover it with thick material like Wetjute bag, or thick cotton cloth or a blanket. Intension is to isolate air to stop supply of oxygen. May also use a big container like drum.

  4. Spray plenty of water to remove heat

  5. Remove material nearer to the affected area

  6. Do not allow fire to spread

  7. Use fire extinguisher only if you know how to use it

In case of electrical fire –

  1. Switch off Main Switch before trying anything else

  2. Do Not spray water on live wire. You will receive electrical shock and in most cases one will get 3rd degree burn.

  3. Use fire extinguisher like Dry Chemical Powder, Carbon Dioxide or any recommended extinguishers.

  4. Water may be used Only If Power supply is totally isolated

LPG Fire –

  1. Gas Cylinder or Pipe Line may burst due to heat. Take Care.

  2. Always take help of Fire Brigade or experienced person.

  3. Alert your neighbors

As a precautionary measures –

  1. Get your system checked at least once in a year

  2. Close valve whenever you get smell of LPG. Only Trained and Experienced person should check LPG Gas system before use.

  3. Kitchen or Room where LPG Cylinder is stored or in use must be well ventilated

  4. Never allow kids to use LPG if they are not well trained

Cello Phone

Important - Do not use your handy if there is leakage of any flammable material like LPG or Solvents. It will explode due sparks generated inside the handy.
