~~The Unfaithful Son~~

(short story)

It was an accident, but a moment there after will be more than a nightmare. More than a nightmare because everything shall change from today onwards… I don’t know how much more time will it take for her to be normal, I am also unaware when she might smile and don’t know if she will ever enjoy her life again to the fullest…! For a second, I dream if I had a power to change anything, first of all, I would have torn out this page from book of our destiny, but for Today, I can only pray… I can pray for myself and for her… nothing else…

Santosh was one of my childhood friends. We were not best friends because we each had someone else to hang out for the entire day. Not so close, but he wasn’t a stranger either. After school, regularly we used to play with the same football, in the same small ground but targeting each other’s goal post. While playing cricket, we use to try our best to make each other go out of pavilion as early as possible… there were numerous days where we hardly smiled at each other in a play-ground. Sometime fighting with each other, but we never changed our playground nor did we stop going to each other’s house: only with complains for each other. Whatever those moments were, our childhood was special. Few moments we spent were memorable, few were forgettable and few were lovable. Those were days till we passed our class Ten and after that, to complete our journey of life, we had different roads to travel and since then we never saw each other.

My parents and I had migrated to the capital city which was 400 kilo-meter far from my native place. Santosh’s mom and dad used to frequently visit us, at least once a month. Although they were not our relatives, to see them in our room as guests in this passive city was always special for us. I used to call them uncle and aunty. In every visit, aunty used to bring something for me, either that be their garden’s fruit or sweet from my favorite hotel. Sometimes she used to say, Santosh was asking about you and at times when aunty and my mummy were talking, she used to compare my naughty behavior with her son’s.

Six months ago, Aunt had bought a motor-cycle for Santosh. I remember how much he loved riding and at the early age of 15, he had learn it, but because he didn’t have license, he was unable to ride it through highway. He was an expert in bike ride and had a dream to win a bike race one day.

It’s almost three months since I last met aunt. I remember how she explained to us how happy Santosh was when he got a bike as a birthday gift. She expressed how busy he is with his new bike. I was happy to listen to Santosh’s tale of realizing his dream.

But… but never knew life had to pass through this incident… I am really sad to hear this news, very painful for me, but looking from the other side my pain might be comparatively negligible as of her. Last night when Santosh was on the way to his house, he met with an accident. There was a severe injury, serious too. Apart from some serious bleeding in his limbs, he had injured his brain too. Uncle informed us about it and he added that doctor has recommended one of the hospitals of the capital city for treatment and they might arrive here within the next 12 hours. He expected some help from us, and of course it’s our duty to help them.

Hearing the news of santosh’s accident, aunty fainted, and as she got her consciousness, she started crying again, being unable to bear a pain which her son had recently faced. I wished and I too prayed, “God keep him safe please”
