Winning? What exactly is winning?
Well, it can be interpreted differently by different people. Moving forward in life, trying hard to build an identity and any concrete progress might be winning...
Is it true that most of the people who participate in any game/event desire nothing but a win?
I do not agree. I believe participation itself gives one joy and winning certainly is the icing on the cake. Today I wish to share with you all a small incident which made me realize how winning isn't always everything.
Last week while I was conducting JAM (Just A Minute) session for my class all the students were very excited. They are all good at speaking skills and I was looking forward to the contest. Speaking on random topics was never a challenge for the sixth graders. We started off with a positive flow and everyone spoke well except for Ravi. The rest of the class anyway didn't expect much from him and his performance didn't come as a shock to the rest.
However, when the contest was over, Ravis best friend, Eshaan who scored the highest came to me. He explained as to how hard Ravi worked for this contest and made an unexpected request. He asked me to deduct some marks from his score and add it to Ravi's score, so that Ravi clears the test. I was surprised. This happened for the first time in my teaching career. I felt extremely happy that the students who are often blamed to be machines have a heart!
I asked him to see me later as I didn't have an answer. The situation of this kind was unique yet strange. When I met him again, I explain Eshaan how I can give Ravi a second chance with the same topic but cannot add marks to his total. In the next class to my surprise, Ravi spoke well, Eshaan had tears in his eyes, I had no choice but to appreciate his friendship.
It was that moment I realized how children value marks and contest. May be even we adults at time are motivated by the same. The contests on Moutshut did motivate me to pen more, however the joy of writing is irreplaceable.
We often crib, brood when our accounts aren't credited but I hardly see people thanking Aps @caretaker and Faisal @faisal
After hosting a contest I realized how difficult it is to host a contest and what the participants go through and I believe we all go through the same at 10am everyday.
