Dear Mr Nagaraj - as usual, a post in your inimitable style touches on the speed at which 'progress' is happening and connect it to what Toffler wrote about 3 decades ago. This post might have been better as a DP.

I feel that the tamil uccharippu of l, L and zh of some singers, notably that of Devan and even ARR himself, takes away from the beauty of listening to the songs.

I'd forgotten to mention that Rahman singers aren't great on the pronunciation of words. Specifically Devan in the Anbil avan song, where he pronounces ... manithaney verukkatheergaL as manithaney verukkatheergal. It always strikes a discordant note when I hear mispronounced tamil lyrics. Even th...e great ARR has this fault of mispronouncing l vs L vs zh words in tamil. (Evident in his singing in Anbe Aruyire also). I am amazed that Shreya Ghoshal, a non-tamil, pronounces these words correctly. Read More

PS2: Hey, I forgot to mention that I liked your review (but for its dismissive style). PPS2: I would like to think of myself as NOT a 'die-hard' fan of Rahman. :)

My first reaction to this review was that it was written with a flippant attitude, bordering on a dismissive style; my mind vacillated between a U and VU rating for this review, and finally plumbed for VU, considering that the author was just expressing her opinion, which need not necessarily coinci...de with mine. My gut feeling (opinion) about the author is that she is a die-hard Rahman fan and hence writes in a defensive fashion, wanting others to rebut her. ;) Having said that, it was a novel experience for me to read a music review in which the reviewer also recommends the time and mood which is best for listening to a given song - that was innovative. Reminded me of reading wine labels which recommend the type of cheese / food that goes best with the said wine. I’ve been running VTV album on a loop for the past month, and I am yet to tire of the songs, inclusive of ’Anbil avan’ and ’Hosanna’. Somehow the title track (VTV) hasn’t reached me as much as others have claimed it has. Omana pennae (or is it "Oh, maNappeNNae) was good and still continues to hold me. ’Auromale’ - took some time to grow on me, but not knowing the lyrics has been a dampener for me. It is definitely in a new mould; I would classify it as a fusion of western country and blues genres with Indian, rather than rock. I guess that Rahman probably fuses western genres also. I agree that it is best heard in during the evening, in a mood for revolt. I liked Mannipaayaa best, with Shreya Ghoshal’s mellifluous voice (it wasn’t sung by Chinmayi). It goes with the melancholy mood of the situation. If you are a melancholic person, this is what you might like. PS: What was supposed to be comment, took the tone of a "review of the review" and later grew into a review of its own. I couldn’t help it. Sorry. :( Read More
