If you want to enjoy Rehman to the fullest extent, get four things with you. CD/ Cassette, MP3 player/ Headphone, Good quality ear phone and lots of time to listen without being disturbed alone. Chances are that you would be able to appreciate his hard work. His tunes could be as simple as genda pool or complex with background score beautifully complimenting. Just pay attention to every detail and you will do justice to him and his die hard fans (not just fans) would be happy with you. He is the only music director who takes risk to produce even bad or mediocre songs.

Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya – There are a lot of singers in TamilNadu who are easily taken for granted despite a no. of hit songs. We generally remember the heroes’ faces or dispose it of as another meodious voice and yet we are sure to enjoy listening them. I found one of those few people to be singer Karthik. No famous movie can be without a title track with emotional chord at play. This song completes the flavour of a movie. One error and he is done for, yet Karthik carefully treads the ever changing dhun. Hear it once and you would wonder if it is a question posed? Best time to hear is night, just when you are about to sleep. This is soft, a lullaby like putting you to peaceful sleep and you almost start dreaming of fairies, the silence envelopes slowly, and you have pressed the button of relaxed mode.

Anbil Avan: It sounds like ‘yeh hawaayein’ of Mein hoon naa in the beginning, the flavour is also happy-happy situation. The ones in which names of the actors appear and we are about to get up from the movie hall but keep sitting kyonki poore pase vasool ho. We prefer watching the song rather than hearing it. Sung by Devan Ekhambaram and Chinmayi Anbil avan is yet another song which you would not care to remember, or remember the scenes of the song when you hear it.

Hosaana: It starts as any normal tamil romantic song. Just when you think that you have heard it before, the slow pace suddenly turns fast though beats do not change especially “antha neram antha neraam…” Hosaanaa which is repeated at convenient pauses are the only ones constant apart from beats. And what do we have here? Rehman’s favourite singer Blazee swiftly makes an appearance with four line rap and then vanishes. After some time you think that Rehman seems to be a bit bored with normal song and changes the tune again. This song is quite popular for being peppy. Sung by Vijay Prakash, Suzanne D’ Mello (Chiggy wiggy in the film blue). Best heard on a sunny afternoon, enjoying the sun (provided it’s a cold place like mine, its sunny and am enjoying the song which seems to bring sunshine). Or in a car with a gang of friends tapping their foot, shouting and screaming with joy. Ecstasy. Notice carefully and you will continuously hear the guitar in the background. The poor thing is overshadowed by violin, change of tune, beats and voice.

Mannippaya: There is only one thing I hate about Rehman and that is, why does he sing? Paise banaane ko, as a playack singer? His voice and singing style has a western touch and he sounds out of place. I know his die hard fans are ready to throw Rotten Tomatoes at me. But that would not change my stand. His voice suits some songs, but definitely not melodious songs. In this soft song, he gives a slightly harsh touch. Shreya Ghoshal has provided a pleading kinda melody to it. A soft number, this is best heard when in a deep thought. In fact, this should one of the most popular songs in the movie, or perhaps the first one to catch attention. Again, this might have been the best had there not been better songs in the movie. Remember Mangta hai kya from Rangeela which catch our attention but lost to better songs like ‘Rangeela re’ and ‘tanha tanha.’
