We were getting late and hurrying to see the 7.00 pm show of Ice Age 4 at Wave Noida. The petrol was running low and prompted me to stop at a Petrol Pump in Mayur Vihar Phase-1, Delhi.
The guys at the pump were so pleasant, ready smiles and all. I told them to fill up 500/- worth of petrol and one of them took my credit card to do the billing. While the guy at the pump showed me zero and began filling the petrol, the other guy called me over to the credit card machine. Thinking that there was some problem with the card, I went over. He was only enquiring whether I wanted a bill for the transaction. Having said no, I scrawled my signature on the bill and snatching the card & bill copy, ran back to the car (as we were getting late for the movie). He was again calling me back saying take your card or something, but I already had the card in my hand, so didn’t bother to turn back.
The guy at the pump had taken out the nozzle from the car and his hand was reaching out to set the counter back to zero. Then I saw and realized that he had only filled 350/- worth of petrol. He enquired whether I had taken the card, for which his colleague was calling me back. In turn, I asked him how much petrol he had filled. His reply was that the pump had some problem and petrol was not coming. He them sheepishly filled up 150/- more of petrol, no smile this time.
Then I realized what their game was and decided that, in future, I would not let this trick be played on me again. My friend tells me that he was conned like this twice, once it was his front tyre (low pressure, sir) and another time it was get-your-car-scratches-removed guy butting in.
So friends, kindly get out of your car, keep a sharp eye on these guys and don’t get distracted.
