Chennai Sangamam is a cultural event, which has started happening couple of years ago. Chennai Sangamam is centered around the art forms which reflect the shared socio-cultural experiences of the people of Tamil Nadu. Every year this fest starts before Pongal.
This is a Seven Day programme held in the evenings performed by about 1,400 artistes from rural areas who would display their skills in folk arts in parks, streets and beaches of the city.
The motto of this cultural event are to
1) Add grandeur to the major Tamil Festival - Pongal
2) Move Tamil Nadu to a top notch tourist spot in India
3) Save the near extinct cultural activities of South India
4) Spread the food culture of Interior Tamil Nadu
5) To make the Chennai Sangamam as one of the Best Festivals in the World.
6) Lots more direct & indirect job creations...
My family visited the Elliot's Beach Venue yesterday to witness the festival, it was grand with cultural events by folk artistes from other states such as Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab performed apart from the major Tamil Cultural artists. We witnessed and got delighted with the classical dance performances, folk dances, kaavadi aatam, beating of varieties of drums, senttai melam, playing of nagaswaram and thavil and display of silambam and other martial arts. If you are at Chennai do watch this event.
