Paid to read - or pay to read
Oct 05, 2001 11:55 AM 3709 Views

Themail.com - get paid for receiving and reading email - well actually, get paid when any of those you refer open emails they receive.

What a chance, think of all the emails you send to your mates, if only you could refer them, if only you could refer them all !! You could continue sending them everything - but even better, for every email they read you would get paid !!

Wow !! You wouldn't get rich, but over time it was bound to mount up, and all because you referred some friends and then sat back and sent email.

But there was more - when your friends referred someone, you then got paid a smaller amount for every email read by your friend's referral - a double whammy in the nicest possible way, and this would continue down a chain !!

I admit it, I'm a sucker for 'something for nothing' schemes (or should it be scams ?) and I signed up. Not only did I sign up, but so did my Mum, my best mate and a few other friends.

I checked regularly, and sure enough my balance was building nicely - slowly, but nicely all the same.

Then the shocks.

1)They were reducing the amount paid per email to 1/10th of the previous amount.

2)Then they weren't paying anyone till they had the accounts and payments audited.

3)Then they wanted paid for administering the accounts - sign-up within 30 days or risk your account being locked.

Needless to say I didn't pay-up - reduced payments, no payment to date and now a request for payment FROM me to keep my account.

I know things are hard in the world of 'dotcom', but I'm not going to swallow this one again. I think I managed to rescue all my accounts with various companies and divert them to other addresses - I hope I have.

But please, be careful - dogs might bite postmen but in this case TheMail bites back.

Don't use it for the money!!

Themail became popular as a way for earning money everytime someone you refer checked his mail. So far so good. But then get the mathematics and the statistics right and you'll find the concept quite absurd especially with their payrates!! I have about 66 referrals and how much did I earn in about 2 months? The grand sum of 1 dollar and 27 cents. I feel like a millionaire!! That's the bad stuff. If you wanna use themail as your email provider without getting paid then you've made a good decision (relatively speaking). Themail actually has some cool features and is quite OK, but definitely not the best.

Space:They give about 5 MB space which is quite standard these days

Receiving mail: Kinda OK. Some of the mail takes a few minutes to get into your inbox and rarely an hour. Most of it comes on time.

Sending mail: Fairly reliable.

Server stability: Fair. I've got an error quite a few times but usually does not last more than a few minutes. Don't use it if your mail is important!

POP retrieval: Themail allows you to retrieve your mail from several other POP accounts. I haven't used this feature and can't comment

Auto Reply: A useful features that sends an automatic mail with your personal message. Quite a nice option!

Mail Forwarding: Not available

Ads: Not too bad but occasionally slow down the page

Overall Speed: Actually not bad. I find hotmail slower (which shouldn't surprise you!)

Overall, you can use this as your second line email server, as there are a few glitches. Use it for your newsletters, subscriptions, etc which may not be important. And yes.... don't bother about the money, it's just about a joke!! Anyway here are the rates- TheMail.com will pay $0.00025 for each new email read by a United States referral or $0.00010 for each new email read by a International referral. TheMail.com will pay $0.00005 for each new email read by a United States indirect referral and $0.00002 for each new email read by a International indirect referral. DON'T FORGET YOU ARE NOT PAID FOR ANY OF THE EMAIL YOU PERSONALLY READ!!! That means you have to read 40 emails to get 1 cent! Plus at the speed their server has been operating at, that comes to about 3 cents an hour.(that's for US members) Internationals: 100 emails for 1 cent! That's about 1 cent an hour.
