Snopes.com is an urban legends (rumours) reference web site. It anchors mainly for the US viewers, but also discusses world wide urban legends. I peep into this website for what is new, almost everyday. Barbara Mikkelson does yeomen service by researching on urban legends which are current and old and find out the facts whether they are true or false or undetermined. As emailing and web-logging have increased usage by leaps and bounds, urban legends which were spread by word of mouth before the advent of the internet, are now spread within seconds all over the world. People send chain emails with these stories which are mostly untrue. People who take the legends serious do a lot of damage to themselves and people around with unnecessary fears and beliefs. Recently somebody send me an e-mail which was about a poisonous spider lurking inside toilet bowls in flights and was told to originate from India. Being an Indian I felt it damaging. Luckily when I referred to snopes.com the legend has been found by Barbara as untrue. I wish there is an India equivalent to snopes.com. There are so many rumours and urban legends floating around in India especially in big cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai (remember the one about the monkey man in Delhi about 2 years ago?), the Indian one would be an instant success. Unfortunately I have not seen any catering to the Indians. (Please post the website url if any readers of this review knows of any such website).
