Induswomanwriting Reviews

THE WONDER SITE
Apr 18, 2011 11:58 AM3538 Views

When I first took to blogging, my nephews thought it was just a passing phase. But gradually it turned out to be an addiction which branched off to story and other writings. Soon I became quite a site marauder snooping around and stumbling upon, new exciting sites. But still my quest was not complete. I was looking for a site with wide readership wherein I could upload my fictions, short stories, serial novels and novellas. Every time I looked for such a site I bumped into dead ends. Was there no site like that on the net? Thought I crestfallen. Sometimes the eagerness for achievement foils the plan. So, I took a break and went back to blogging.

Then one fine day I came across a link in the facebook. Somebody had uploaded a blog post on https://induswomanwriting.com (IWW). The name “Indus Woman” had a historical flavour to it. I was instantly attracted to the link which I clicked to find just the site I was looking for. A site which allowed writers like me to upload poems, perspectives, short stories, travelogues, serial novels, short novellas, inspirational writings - the list was comprehensive.

I was super excited and did upload a short story from my blog as a test entry. It worked and I received a few appreciative comments. Now there was no stopping me. Next came my novella for children. That was a bonanza! There was a section for children short stories, poems, novels-novellas also. As I am extremely fond of reading as well as writing short stories for children this was the site for me. Soon I realized the other advantages of the site too. The web mistress, Ms. Lakshmi Menon, was an orthodox site administrator who read and approved of each and every entry before uploading the same which meant no undesirable or fake posts. The terms and conditions of the site also allowed much leverage to the writers. All copy rights rested with the writers. Interacting with Lakshmi, we soon became very good friends. But this review is not because we are friends or an opportunity to brag about my own work. This review is to bring to the attention and knowledge of the esteemed MSians that there is a website which can satisfy your literary urges and acumen. To top it all, as the name suggests, the website is for, of and by women writers. A prosperous site by the empowered woman folk! The second bonus point!!!

Lakshmi herself is an established writer. She was passionate about writing from her school days. A course in journalism and creative writing helped hone her skills more. It was somewhere around 2009, that the idea of starting a website for her own writing sprouted which was soon to be replaced by a higher thought of a platform for the like-minded Indian women globally to meet and share their creative work. Many new talents this way could also be discovered and exposed to a wider community through this site which would be the channel to showcase their talent, get their work commented upon, provide an opportunity to get noticed and for some upcoming writers help find better job opportunities/assignments in the literary field, without any expenditure or headache of running a website on their own. Further, the freshers also get an opportunity to interact with many established writers like Dr. Eva Bell, Prema Sashtri, Vimala Ramu and others who are regular members of this site.

And that is how the concept of induswomanwriting.com germinated. The website was registered in October 2009 with just a few stories to share. By the end of May 2010, Lakshmi started seriously monitoring the site. There were several visitor-generated pages and the site enjoyed about 15,000 page views (a month) with visitors from 82 countries, within such a short time.

The most discussed sections are Perspective, Short Stories, Poems, Children's Stories, Inspirational Stories, Serial Novels and Travel stories. Two new fora – Book Review and Health Articles have been recently added to this elaborate list. The Book Review section allows a critical evaluation of books under review with a provision to leave the site link on which greater details of the review are available. For example, I generally add a preface to my book reviews on IWW and leave the MS link at the end for greater readership. This has unintentionally forged a symbiotic connect between the two sites which have proved mutually beneficial by way of publicity as well as wider readership.

The readers can maneuver through the site easily. Its beauty lies in its simplicity, all the options are well highlighted and accessible at the click of the mouse. Submission of entries is also very simple, user friendly and all the steps (not many) are easily understandable. Of course, there is no monetary benefit for any contribution. But the biggest benefit is that aspiring writers get a platform and wide exposure to showcase their talent, without incurring any expenditure. The more contributions the more chances of the writer getting noticed. As the site is also visited by many publishers chances of attracting their attention is greater. In addition, regular contributors can publicize their personal blog or site for writing, to get more visitors, by adding it in the “Contributors” page. The site accepts the work of both published and new writers. However, the site only accepts contributions found suitable for publication. Utmost care is taken because this is a kid friendly site.

Generally it does not take much time to upload the posts. In case the contribution does not get published within a week’s time, the site Admn. can be contacted at the link given therein. Preference is given to contributions from Indian women writers from any part of the globe. However, contributions, useful and worthy of publication, from Indian men are also accepted.Bonus point no. 3 children, above the age of thirteen, too can submit their stories. However, they have to mention their age, at the bottom of the story/poem. One word of caution here - duplicate content, already available on-line are not permissible for publication. The site encourages original stories. If it is a story long published no more available online then the same can be submitted mentioning where it was originally published, as a foot note. At present the site is managed single-handedly by Lakshmi until the site can be self-funded. So MSians with scholarly and literary skills and passion in him/herself or in the family can get set go ahead, prowl in and around the site and sign in free if you feel like it.

Unlike MS, IWW is not a social networking site or consumers’ platform. However, getting to know a fellow writer through site interaction may be a matter of happy coincidence. There are many features and facilities available on MS like the detailed pre-designed review format, chance to view the readership score etc. which are not available on IWW. Whereas on the other hand, MS can think of re-modulating the DPs to fit in lengthier posts/short stories. Comments by far are very few but as Lakshmi points out the wide view that one’s work gets is what matters. She herself has got a few offers from publishers for writing assignments.

Happy Reading!
