This is an excellent site
Oct 07, 2006 08:27 AM 4494 Views

I have been a contributor to this site, which I came across by chance. It is a comprehensive site, with many interesting articles covering a wide variety of topics.

It also has a fine literary side as well, to which I have contributed. Many of the articles, stories, poems are well-written, and many of the contributors are well educated and talented people.

It's apparent that the editors know what they are doing when it comes to developing a great magazine on-line. It is very diverse and interesting.

I write mostly poetry, occasionally prose, and attempt to be as creative in my writing as possible, limiting myself as little as possible. I do not have a MFA, but I am well-educated formally as well as worldly, so I don't think a certain piece of paper has anything to do with good creative writing, regardless of what you may read elsewhere.

Thanks for reading this.

Delighting Appa Patwardhan
Jul 09, 2004 12:15 PM 5666 Views

In my building lives a retired Govt official Mr. Madhavrao Patwardhan better known as Appa Patwardhan among friends. A social worker at heart, he is also a man with varied interests.

His main concern at the time of retirement was that he should not get mentally lethargic. He had seen many brilliant gentlemen who, after formal retirement, speedily went downhill in their physical health mainly due to the lack of mental occupation. To avoid this, he started taking up various new interests with a vengeance to stimulate his intellect and keep his brain ticking.

One of his first pursuits was “Astrology”. He took a formal 2 month course in this subject and also bought a few books on the subject. Having some interest in this subject myself, I found myself chatting with him asking him about my horoscope. I was quite impressed in the depth that he had acquired in the subject. There was also a keen sense of hunger to learn more.

I decided to google around the net and pulled out some literature which I thought would be of interest to him. He was exhilarated to see the new source of information. Of the various articles, he found one extremely interesting. This happened to be one from a website called boloji.com. At that stage, I did not give it much thought.

Appa did try his hand at the net, but being totally computer-illiterate was unable to make much headway.

During his next foray into intellectual expansion nearly a year later, he started getting interested in Buddhism. Once again it was me to the rescue. I supplied him with another set of articles and information. Appa was really impressed this time. Boloji had delivered once again.

By this time, Appa’s perseverance had yielded results and he had started getting the hang of surfing the net. Visiting cyber-cafes became a pastime in itself. With his spectrum of interests getting wider, Boloji.com seemed to hit home run each time, making it his favorite website. It was through his recommendation that this portal came into my consciousness.

The site

This is essentially a portal which has information and articles on a wide variety of topics. The articles are well classified according to different categories:

Heritage articles on topics of Architecture, astrology, ayurveda, cinema, culture, dances, fables, festivals, history, places and spirituality.

On Religions like Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism

Society & Lifestyle issues such as family matters, health, parenting, perspective, recipes, society, teens, women.

On Literature, creative writings, book reviews, humor, memoirs, musings, photo essays, travelogues, etc.

But frankly that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Explore within and you will find a treasure house of information, Opinions and views.

For instance, when I was searching extensively for iuformation on Meditation, I found some very good articles on this site.

The Writers on the Site

Essentially the writers are those who are some authority on the subject. Unlike some other sites, where even junk can be posted, these articles are scrutinized by a team of editors and only then published. This ensures that there is some depth and quality in the writings.

Speed and Navigation

I have found the navigation quite user-friendly with all the categories very nicely titled and laid out. Speed is reasonably good.

Search Engine

To help you access specific subjects, the site has an in-built search engine powered by Google which can take you to a list of articles on the site, which has your topic of interest.

Recommendation

The site has recently been rechristened indianest.com, so do not be confused to see this name when you visit the site. Try visiting this at least once. I’m sure this will egg you on to find out about new subjects of interest which you may have never thought of earlier.

What is extraordinary?

Portal is in both the languages i.e. Hindi & English. Hindi literature fans can open their section and submit the articles as well. This unique ease makes the portal extraordinary. Subjects like “Desi Mind” & Vastu are very creative. Special channel for teenagers & women also makes this portal unique. One gets surely puzzled while surfing this site that what to be seen and what to be not.

What is Oops?

Submission is not easy. You may often be reported “front page error”. Submission in Hindi is not so easy, as there is no universal font and one has to download “Shusha” font.

Like “Shrilipi” & other Hindi fonts, here also, fonts are mirrored from English alphabets. Writing and submitting articles may be not successful always. Site is not purely literary but a platform of all the cocktails.

But you will love this:

Despite of all this, one will surely love to visit this all in one literary portal.

Change in address: Friends! address of this website and name have been changed. Now it is known as Indianest.com. New address is '' http://www.indianest.com''

Sorry
Jun 13, 2003 02:19 PM 5299 Views

Sorry guys. I don't know how this happened (two posts on the same topic). I have some idea, but sorry for the confusion.

This is one of the best websites run by Indians. A website run by NRI’s in the U.S. I believe (not too sure); and the majority of contributors to this site are highly educated or at least highly intellectual Indians both in India and the U.S. There are also contributions from Americans and people from other parts of the world. These are doctors, professors, ex-diplomats, anthropologists, and professionals from many fields that contribute here.

There are over 50 topics and hundreds of articles relating to them. The best part is you don’t have to be an intellectual to browse this site, but if you are one; there is ample stuff for you. Remember however, that this site is about diversity and perspectives, and hence not all the things on this site are accurate, or I rather say are subjective. Topics on Civilizations, current affairs, politics and such are extremely interesting and informative. The biggest challenge for the reader however, will be to decide which arguments are appealing to him/her. I look at this site as a big brainstorming session. There are views from different walks of life, and most have some sort of truth in them.

There are other reasons why I like this website; the main reason being that there is no back stabbing, immature attacks on perceptions, and other controversies that usually exists in the Indian community (a very gross generalization of the Indians in the US at least.) The writers are very tolerant of others views for the most part, and are largely unbiased. There literally is something for everyone. I do not contribute to this site, but I do like it a lot. Some topics are a little futuristic in some ways, and are only for people with an open mind. As I said, there are many controversial topics, and some with extremely philosophical and brilliant writings. But there is also humor, cartoon, dohas, stories, sports, technology and many more. The simple question is: ARE YOU READY FOR THE FUN / CHALLENGE? If you are, you wont regret it one bit. Have a blast, and let me know how you liked it.
