Bawarchi.com is a Good Site

Bawarchi.com is a  food and Beverage website. It was declared as one of the best website of the year 2014.

I have browsed this site few times and I liked the site. It contains detailed description of various vegetarian and non vegetarian recipes .

One can also watch cooking videos  which makes learning easier. This site also has many good articles on food and health, these articles are very informative and good to read.

What I like most about the site is -Its too organised, one can easily search what one wants to .Even the list of recipes is given in alphabetical order starting the names of recipe from A to Z .

The written recipes are also good, ingredients and method of preparation is given in detail so that one can easily understand. One of the recipes which I like most on this site is  Vegetarian Omelette - an omelette without egg! made with gram flour( besan) and spices .

So one can find some unique and good recipes from this site.

Indian Cooking 101

I confess, I am ignorant when it comes to some ingredients that are found in Indian cuisine. It’s not that I don’t like Indian food, I do, I love the smells and rich flavors that the fine dishes offer, it’s just that I never had the opportunity to develop my skills at preparing Indian dishes. That is, until I found this site!

First Glance

At first glance one can see this site is very easy to navigate with it’s simple layout and clear and precise topics.

Content

When you first go to the site you notice several examples of weekly menus. I love this and wish more sites offered this type of layout. As someone who enjoys the ease and satisfaction that comes from a weekly menu plan I find this aspect very refreshing.

The first menu you find is one called Saroj Cookbook. The Saroj Cookbook comes from Saroj Kering and consists of wonderful recipes that she has developed over the twenty years that she’s been cooking.

The next menu you see is Malaysian Dishes which this week included wonderful sounding recipes such as Pandan Chicken, Grilled Fish in Banana Leaves and Seafood Fried Rice.

There are also reader contributions and a large portion dedicated to health and nutrition. There’s even a section dedicated to Festivals and Festive Specials that even include Vrat and Bengali Recipes. And a wonderful reference section for looking up the meaning of certain ingredients. I must say this was a huge help for someone such as myself who doesn’t know all the translations of the names of ingredients.

And if you don’t manage to find the answers to your questions there is even a place to write in and ask Saroj questions.

In Closing

In closing I have to say this seems to be a very well thought out site that seems to have strived for simplicity and organization which makes for a very good site indeed.

For the Cooking-Challenged!!

''I'll bet what motivated the British to colonize India is that they were just looking for a decent meal.''

Martha Harrison

Even in this cholesterol-sensitive era, few cooks have tried to trim the fat from Indian food. And who could blame them? Traditional Indian cooking relies on rich ingredients and faith. If you're going to eat aloo paranthas with a dollop (or in my case with 2 dollops) of butter, one huge glass of sugar rich lassi topped off by Gajar ka Halwa, you must have faith that your arteries won't clamp shut before you get up from the table.

I will review Bawarchi.com from the Bachelor point of view. Its what comes naturally to me...fighting as I have been with repeated cooking disasters!

It is very easy for a typical bachelor to follow the wonderfully simple and easy recipes listed at this web site. For a typical bachelor, 4 points are of importance:

The recipes must be :

a) With as few ingredients as possible

b) With only spices commonly present in households

c) Without any complicated cooking instructions - everything

should ideally just be thrown together and heated :)

d) Ideally cheap (So that more money can be spend on beers and partying :))

Bawarchi.com is aesthetically very pleasing to the eye. There are no fancy graphics, no distractions, the colour scheme is consistent & pleasing and the raison d'être of the site is obvious: this is a no nonsense, no frill site, devoted solely to the culinary pleasures.

There are sections for veggies, non-veggies and Jain veggies. Check out the Chicken Tikka Masala in the non-veggie section, the panner makhanwala in the Jain section and the dum aloo in the veggie section...yummm!!

There is a tips section, which is very very useful, there are a lot of handy tips in this section, like, I bet you didn?t know that day old bread slices can be substituted for cake if cake is not available at hand, or that Salads can be made very decorative, by using normally discarded skins of apples, peas, cucumbers, etc. Wow. I mean, that is profound!

There is even a beauty tip hidden here( guys, don't even try this...ladies, I am sure this will be helpful!)--- Have an invigorating bath by finishing off with a bucketful of water to which 3 tbsp. of white vinegar, 2 tbsp. rose water and a few drops of your favourite flowery essence has been added. The vinegar makes skin supple and avoids the dryness and scaliness of skin

There is the mandatory reader's contribution section, in which I found some very cool recipes...check out the Microwave Bhindi masala.

There is an excellent section on Menus and their Selection, like there is a menu for people suffering from diabetes. In the health and nutrition section, we have Saroj (me thinks she is the big kahuna of this site) responding to reader's queries, though I am sure if she were to respond to some of my queries, she would probably quit her job...I mean, I am your typical bachelor guy who likes things in cooking to be with the minimum fuss, and generally tends to ask many stupid questions when it comes to cooking!!

There are plenty of mouth watering sweets in the festivals section, which has all the traditional festival recipes....check out the dishes in the Navratri section. There are sections devoted to Amul and Dhara...nice recipes there. Bawarchi.com also has a nutrition section for the health freaks among us, where a registered dietician and nutritionist answers reader queries.

There is a glossary section, which lists the Indian and English terms of cooking, along with measurement conversions. This, I feel, is the most important tool a budding cook needs. Another impressive feature of this site is that they have links to other food sites, so that if you can't find what you re looking for here, you can try at another site!

I would recommend Bawarchi.com to everyone, but especially to the bachelor's out there. All the recipes are easy to follow, written in a language that the cooking-challenged can comprehend easily, and the recipes are no-fuss, easy to cook. Most of these recipes are pure old-fashioned heart-exploding goodness ;)

''The receipts of cookery are swelled to a volume; but a good stomach excels them all.''

William Penn (1644-1718)

Bawarchi is Really Good !

I am happy, whenever I take time to explore a cookery site. Moreover, cooking is something which interests me most and hence going through a cookery site has always been a pleasure!

Bawarchi.com is an Indian portal for recipes where one can post their recipes and send in their queries.

You can see some reader's contributions of recipes like Benarsi Aaloo Baingan Ki Sabji by Supriyo Dey, Stuffed Bhindi by Priya Fadnis, Gurkhali Chutney by Prabha, Vegetable Patholi by Rajyalakshmi Philkana, Spicy Prawns by Praveena and much more!

You can also contribute to Bawarchi. They say you can send in your favourite recipes, with a brief profile about yourself. They also suggest you send in recipes for items which are not already featured here.

It seems, recipes in the Readers' Contributions section of bawarchi have not been tested by them. It is meant to be a section for you to share your recipes.

You can see tips for making puddings,Naans & rotis and many more! I will give you just two from them.

1) If you have excessive stock of green chillies, do not waste them. Boil in hot salted water, till white. Drain and sun dry till brittle. Crush or store whole and use as required in any dish requiring chillies, without Changing the colour of the dish.

2) To prevent lumps while adding flour to any liquids, eg. Water, buttermilk, etc. first mix the flour in a little bit of the Liquid to form a smooth paste. Add this to the remaining liquid and stir well.

In the health & nutrition section, you can see articles on Methods Of Food Preservation and Sterilisation and replies to your queries.

There is a link to Sifi Hindi for more tips, for people who can't read English and who would like to read in Hindi.I think that's a good idea! Even your grandma, if she has no knowledge of English, can sit and read in Hindi!

You can see Saroj's Cookbook, listing 1000+ recipes Alphabetically (A-Z), By Category. This week's special recipes are,

Dhana Methi Ki Sabzi

Chawli Ki Kadhi

Rajma Ki Sabzi

Channa Ki Sabzi and

Besan Methi

You can say Cheese with Amul! The World Looks better that way! Amul brings a new set of recipes Dhara Zaike Ka Safar to the readers.Lots of recipes, to try with Amul Cheese. To name a few,

Amul Cheese Potato Tikkis

Amul Cheese Mini Puri Sandwiches

Golden hearts and

Garlic Bread.

Enjoy your time, making these delicacies.

There is an 'Ask Saroj' column. Saroj is their resident expert and promises to answer all your questions: on food, cooking, and perhaps, life. You can enter your name and email and submit your query.

Link to Indiaplaza.com takes you to their website containing music, movies, books, kitchen, Home store, Arts, Fashion, Phone cards and Gifts. You can check out food and groceries and get free shipping on some grocery orders $ 50 or more. You need to see their shipping policies.

'Festivals' is a special section devoted to the various festivals of India. These festivals bind the people of the nation across various states and religions in a unique way and provide a spectacle that cannot be experienced anywhere else in the world.I am sure all the MouthShut foreign members would find this section very interesting and informative!

I had a great time, going through most of my favorite recipes here.I am sure you will too!
