Mizoram Tours & Travel Guide

OVERVIEW

Mizoram is located in North-Eastern side of India, and capital of this state is Aizawl . It got the name from ‘Mizo’ meaning highlander and thus it is known as “land of hill people”.

The Tropic of Cancer passes over Aizawl town. Mizoram is bounded by states of Assam and Manipur in the North, on the East and South by Chin Hills and Arakan (Myanmar), Chittagong hill tracts of Bangladesh and state of Tripura in the West. Mizoram borders three states of India – Assam, Manipur, and Tripura.

History of this region is unknown, but it is said that the Mizos moved to these lands hundreds of years ago. The tribal groups of Tibeto-Burmese populated Mizoram.

High literate agrarian economy of Mizoram suffers due to jhum or shift cultivation. The state produces various crops and fruits but the quantity is poor. With time, the jhum practices have been replaced by horticulture and bamboo products industry.

Mizoram is not at all industrialized state, mostly due to poor connectivity and harsh climate. The conventional industries of blacksmiths and weavers play an important but most of the produce is for home consumption and does not meet the market standards.

What's really worth treasuring is Mizo art and crafts .Mizo women are very good at weaving and intricate designs created by them are worth cherishing. The music and dance of Mizos differ from community to community. The most popular dance is Cheaw Dance, performed with bamboo checks and needs a rhythm coordination between the instrumentalists and the dancers.

There are three main festivals celebrated in a year, and they are called kut. The three Kuts are Chapchar Kut, Mim Kut and Pawl Kut, and all of them are connected with agricultural activities.
