Philips 29 Flat TV having Picture Distortion
Oct 24, 2008 11:52 AM 4148 Views

I bought this 29" Philips Flat TV 3 years ago and it was working fine , the sound and the visual clarity was excellent. And during the last few weeks I get a problem, If I switch on the TV the picture displayed in blur effect / distortion effect after few minutes(say around 1o mins) the display gets to the normal condition.

And after I switch off and on the next time I get the similar problem and takes around 10 minutes for the television to get settle to the normal condition and all I can say now is that  it sound to me like warning towards a big problem coming my way. Anyone has a good solution to this or anyone experienced similar problem and found a better way to fix it up, please help.

Also if you know any good  Philips service station located in Chennai or can they come and attend the faults at my premises?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks,

Venkatesh

Flickering when connected to Progressive Scan
Jan 04, 2007 10:11 AM 3759 Views

I purchased this product  1and 1/2 year back, and it was working fine till 2 months back.

Now it is flickring when connected to Progressive scan DVD player for initial 2 minutes and then become stable.

I am not sure what makes it flicker in the start and then becomes alright, I tested it with other brands of DVD player also, same problem.Looks like after it heats up it starts working normally

I hope it does not degrade with time as it started 2 months back.

It even works pretty well with PS2 gaming on progressive scan after warming up

It works pefectly fine with normal RCA connection and Cable connection and no degradation in Sound Quality.

Other wise this product is good value for money and gives good picture quality, as this is a 100 HZ, this is soothing to watch TV on this.

I hope philips revert back on this and let me know about the possible causes and solutions

Excellent Stuff...beats Sony,LG by miles...
Mar 21, 2006 01:14 PM 6280 Views

I had a LG 29''.

I changed my job and went to Philips Software Bangalore....during movement of base..I left the LG in my own flat in Pune.

I went on to buy the Philips 29PT8321 (Aug 2004) after a lot of research (not because I was working there...I ain't working there anymore) which contained 100 Hz, HDTV ready.

The piece is excellent and great in looks...without much clutter of buttons on the panel. The Sound Quality is fantastic as well the picture Quality is excellent....it further improved when I switched on to the personal DTH to have the digital feed for the TV....the visual quality is really mind blowing.

I went on to buy the home theatre LX3600D....which teams up great with the TV to give me a Superb Quality Component Video...this picture output can surpass all other models I have seen...be it Sony 100Hz (which my friend has) which couldn't achieve the same result....not even a nearby result.

It beats the LG 29'' (a normal 50 Hz ) which I had earlier not to mention..:-)

The 100 Hz makes a lot of difference and convincingly gives you the best result. I had not problems with the neither the TV nor the home theatre...which I have been using for more than 1.5 years now....have made me the un-official Brand Ambassador for Philips. This TV also gives you advanced options other than the preset options available for picture, temperature and Sound...but I adjusted them manually for my needs by the custom settings....I think this makes the remarkable difference to the output you get in terms of Picture and Audio.

I had heard a lot of Philips service issues....but on the contrary I had a good exprerience of that too (touch wood)....they had been proactive to when I querried to unlock the reqion code for my DVD player...also needed some firmware upgrade in DVD...did it proactively n fast.

They also offered me something like comprehensive Philips AMC...which I didn't opt for...but still it gives you the option for going for the same.

My Full recommendation is for the above kind of scenario with DTH, 29PT8321, LX3600D Home Theatre works absolutely fine....worth every penny you pay for.

Ex ellent Picture Quality

I purchased a Sony 29'' at Rs. 31990/- in July. But the picture was BAD, I decided to change my TV and I exchanged the sony for this TV. The Sony TV was so sharp that even DVD playback showed grainy picture even when sharpness was turned down to zero. Guys Sony is now trying to cheat people with the brand name it had built years ago. Now that the company is going to loss, its quality has gone down the drain but it still has its products overpriced. I was fooled so I am warning you guys, before you buy a Sony TV, check the actual piece you was going to take home and compare it side by side with TVs from other manufacturers. You will be surprised how grainy, the picture in Sony TVs are. I gave it up at Rs. 10000/- and then paid Rs. 18500/-. So the total cost of the philips TV was Rs. 28500/- Actually I buy TVs for picture quality, not for 100000 Watts sound or something like that. With this TV you can even watch only from 1 metre away whereas with the Sony TV you had to be at least 4 metres away not to see sharpness artifacts.

One thing is that this TV makes some mild ''pop'' sound when changing channels but this is OK, you only hear it if your volume is very low.

Picture quality is superb with the Digital Scan option. It reduces flickering to around perhaps 95% and its zoom actually zooms horizontally as well as vertically so that you do not see stretched pictures in the zoom of cheap TVs.

8321 - What it could have been!

I bought a Philips 29PT8321 last year, Aug 2004. I was with Philips (software) then and bought it off the eShop at a concessional price in Bangalore

The TV was awesome for the first year. Sound was ok, but visuals were stunning. I was really happy.

But the honeymoon was short. The picture tube went bust in a month after warranty expiry. Philips Service SUCKS BIG TIME. Hard work put in by all the good engineers of Philips goes down the drain by these rude, insensitive and discourteous Philips service personnel.

I sent a mail to Philips customer service using the website. I got an automated reply and another one promising a response in 'few' days. I have not got a response yet. (15 days since Oct Last week?)

Almost every damn electronic / electrical / lighting product in my house is Philips. (Talk about loyalty). And every friend of mine buys Philips because of my advocacy.

To top it all, I have written a book on Embedded Realtime Systems Programming, for Tata McGrawHill. The book is dedicated to my parents and to employees of Philips.

I guess, I have learnt my lesson.

Dont buy a 29PT8321 (now 29PT8322) unless you are happy with a TV that runs for exactly one year and would go bust after warranty expires like Tom Cruise's glasses in MI2.

Promises a lot but does not deliver

I had been looking to upgrade from my normal 21'' tv to a 29'' future ready tv which would have progressive scan option for dvd input and good sound. I bought this tv after a lot of research on the internet & going through brochures of different companies like sony , samsung, sansui, videocon, lg, panasonic etc. Philips 29PT8322 (8321earlier) fulfilled my requirements and was also affordable at 34,990/-(march 05'price). it also had great looks, nice and clean cut without any buttons cluttering the front panel but instead menu, volume and channel buttons were put on top of the cabinet. the first thing I did not like about the tv after I had purchased it was it's remote control with it's buttons not placed in a user friendly design.earlier I was using a samsung plano 21''tv and it's remote was a lot more user friendly. anyhow, the performance of Philips 29PT8322 was ok in the first few months during which I mostly used it to watch cable and vcd's. it was only when I purchased a philips dvd player (dvp 642k) that I found that when I connected the same to the tv via component video input (CVI channel) and put on the progressive scan option the screen flickered on startup, a little bit at first but it steadily deteriorated. later on the flickering spread to normal tv channels as well. at present the tv is lying at the philips service centre who are trying to figure out the problem. to any potential buyers my advice is not to be deterred by my review because this could be a one off case. my earlier experience with electronics has taught me that one has to be lucky with the particular piece of equipment that one has purchased and brand names do not matter all that much. even a sony could turn out to be a dud.

UPDATE-

philps service centre could not solve my problem & ultimately I myself figured the source of the problem in this t.v. it had something to do with the power supply of this particular t.v. .there is no discernible voltage fluctuation in my house & other t.v.'s work fine on the same power supply but on a hunch i connected a voltage stabilizer with this t.v. and tried out various voltage settings and to my surprise I found that if the voltage was set to 200 volts the flickering did not appear. other owners of this t.v. should also try this out. otherwise the t.v. has performed fairly well till date and I believe that with all it's features & sub 30k price now, it's quite a decent buy.

Good Stuff for 100Hz TV
Oct 21, 2004 05:00 PM 6902 Views

It is a 29'' Pure Flat model with Flicker Free 100hz / digital scan. Also it is HDTV compatible which is great & upcoming Video Std !

I got it for 34k ! Sony, Samsung have got 100Hz models for above 50k ! So at 34k this is a good choice !

Picture Clarity wise it is good. But somehow I feel for Colors the saturation is more & hence intense color video would have slightly lower clarity otherwise it is good. This saturation effect is not there in Onida, our previous 21 inch TV. A solution for this (to some extent) is set colours to 22-25 (on 0 to 99 scale) & increase contrast to 50-60 & sharpness to 50-60.

Though I have not seen 100Hz models of Sony, Samsung & Philips together but I feel Philips is up to std. May be others can see it together & compare in the showroom.

Audio is Very Good. This model is meant for Home Theater effect. With DVD Players it can give Virtual Dolby else with Cable it can give good surround sound.

Silvery Looks for the Model are very good.

Some clicks from cabinet after some time may be due to heating/cooling of the plastic cabinet.

Till now (6 months) it has not given any problem.

Guys you may go for it but compare yourself with Sony/Samsung models & decide !
