Firebird Internet Browser Reviews

An Amazing tool from Mozilla
Aug 21, 2003 09:42 PM 3657 Views

99% of the world uses Internet Explorer. Well, this fact is taken more seriously by the Micro$oft guys and they've decided not to spend too much money on IE6. But, for the first time in years, IE has got a real competition. Yeah, the brand new Mozilla Firebird. Good, you say, but why? Let me tell you why.

  1. Looks do matter. I find this new baby more attractive than any other browser. Just a personal thing. IE surely looks pale compared to FB.

  2. New, easy-to-use tab browsing. Just the thing I want. When I use XP, all my browser windows get grouped and I hate it. But then, if I open them separately, I've to browse through my panel, you know what I mean. Tab Browsing is cooler than it sounds.

  3. Integrated search. You don't have to type https://google.com at all. Hey, it has also got a quick search for ''I'm feeling lucky'' :-)

  4. Though starts up a bit slowly than Mozilla 5, it gets racing once it's up. Surely this is faster than any other Mozilla version. I think Opera should no longer call itself ''The fastest browser on earth''.

  5. A good-looking, well-working JavaScript console. You got to check out the ''Page info'' thing among it's tools. Gives a good overview of the page currently under the tab. All the links in the page, the encryption etc etc.

  6. Install/Un-install themes. This is THE coolest thing about Firebird. Large number of themes to chose from, though not built-in, they rock the set. And for those poor souls who can't get out of IE, there is a IE theme too :).

So, what are you still waiting for? Go to https://mozilla.org and download your copy now. Looks like very soon, we'll be having a two-browser world.

ps:- Alt-D/Ctrl-Enter work well. And the text size fits perfectly well, unlike Internet Exploder.

FireBird : The net your way
Aug 13, 2003 12:43 PM 4790 Views

Before I start writing stuff about FireBird let me give your some news about Netscape.

News : AOL the parent company of Netscape has stopped the development of Netscape Browser so the version

7.1 shall be final for Netscape.

The company laid off all the employees has has taken the logo out from the building. The developers although shall continue to supoort the browser Mozilla which is a open-source browser.

Mozilla has found a new organization named Mozilla Foundation.

Mozilla FireBird as their website mentions is a ’’lean, mean browsing machine’’ and I bet no one can stop them from saying so.

It sure is one of the best browser there currently is on the web, with feaures that would put IE to a shame. It surely beats IE by a margin which I suppose IE could never ever think off.

INFO:

FireBird is made from the source code of Mozilla,so you get the same stability that you get from Mozilla only in this case you don’t get a Mozilla Mail Cleint but a plain browser.

INSTALLING INSTRUCTION

FireBird is available for download from mozilla.org and this browser comes in a .zip format type of a file.

So all you have to do is download the zip file which currently is of size 6.8MB.Then unzip the file into your Hard Disk and double click on the icon which looks like a Gozilla.

THE FIRST LOOK

Believe me on my first look at FireBird I didn’t like it,really(I mean the looh...not functionality). But then I installed this theme named BlueMonkey then there was no looking back.

Never again did I click back on the Opera icon(YA!! I HATED IE FROM THE START).

What’s in FireBird

FireBird has many many features which I surely would like to tell all of you.

1)Tabbed Browsing - Tabbed browsing basically means you can open new windows within the main window.

So now you taskbar isn’t crowded. All you have to do is press CTRL+T.

2)POP-UP Blocking - POP-UP blocking is inbuilt in FireBird so you can now rest assured that there aren’t the annoying small windows opening up now and then.

So no third party software.FireBird automatically does the work by showing a small icon on the bottom of the screen( A blue icon ).

3)Integrated Search - FireBird has built in search facility which let’s you search Google and dmoz.org from the browser. All you have to do is enter the thing you want to search select the search engine and press enter.

So now you don’t have to visit google and then key in the words.

4)Skin’s - FireBird is fully customizable, so now you can download skins from the website, all you have to do is visit the site and click on the link and wait till the skin is downloaded.

5)Extensions - You can have FireBird do all the things you wish by installing extensions.Visit the websites select the extension of your choice and then simply click.

Need help or have questions

Well if at any time you need help or have any question you can visit the FireBird General Forum at https://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=7 and post you questions.

You will find almost everything here or if you don’t simply post.

I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY...

to all you IE user’s out there, please try this browser once and you will never want to turn back to IE,BELIEVE ME.

FireBird surely is the best simple browser available on the net, no frill’s only a great browser.

Do check it out and if you like this browser please let me know through M2M or by posting a comment.

WOW !! The best of all browsers

I want to thank cybersunil for informing me about Firebird. I downloaded it yesterday and man-oh-man, its fantabulous.

The download was a breeze (perhaps because I have a high speed leased line), no supposedly menu driven installation that other browsers talk about, no Uninstall et al.

Just clicked on the executable and there I was, browsing the net. One just has to add the proxy data (if hooked on to the net via a proxy server). Beliece you me, its a completely refreshing experience, what with the annoying pop-up windows being blocked without any fancy utility to install.

Pages load much faster than IE and other elderly relatives. Though I have not yet tried out all the features, I have already made it my default browser. I cannot wait for the next major upgrade (release1.x) which would make it possibly the most stable one in the business.

Have not yet got funny Javascript errors (IE comes up with these quite frequently), not screen locks and moreover, it uses scant memory resources. This browser would be very useful for the home PCs which usually are short of memory. The small footprint (I mean HD usage) is a definite bonus. I want to thank the developers who have come up with a great product that will most certainly make inroads into the IE and other browsers market.

Once I explore all the functionality, I am definitely going to stop using IE, for critical as well as critical use.

Excellent Browser.

I've used this browser one helluva lot. Earlier it was called phoenix but they had to change the name cuz some companies were shouting copyright infringement.

I've downloaded each and every build from 0.1 to 0.6. The features added with each build were astonishing.

If you've used Mozilla before - believe me - Firebird is godsend for you. Blazing startup - nift features, small memory footprint. This is the best browser that you can have.

I dont know how it compares to IE - but it does have some nifty features which might get you addicted:

  • Popup blocking

  • Tabbed Browsing

  • Integrated e-Mail and newsgroup client (I dont know what's it called - but it's out there somewhere)

  • Download Manager

  • Password Manager

I used to swear by Firebird (erstwhile Phoenix) when I was using IceWM but I switched to Konqueror though, because of its tight integration with KDE. But still, I dont have to think twice to call it one of the best browsers out there.

Go for it! Especially if you're on Linux!

(If you're on Windoze - may god save your soul :)

Mozilla firebird - The Ultimate Browser
Aug 10, 2003 05:23 PM 7074 Views

Mozilla Firebird (formerly Phoenix) is the best browser I have ever used.

It's feature rich and yet it's small compared to most other browsers.

the features of Firebird are

1)pop-up blocking

You can block pop-ups selectively. That is you can configure firebird to allow certain sites to open pop-ups.Firebird tells you when it has blocked a pop-up and you can unblock the site if you wat to see the pop-up.

2)Small size(windows 6.8MB and linux 9.2MB)

3)No need to install it. In windows just unzip the zip file you downloaded and double click the

mozilla firebird icon.done!

In linux just untar the tar-ball and execute the moziafirebird executable in the MozillaFirebird directory.

4)More space for web pages.Firebird allots more space to web pages than most browsers (if not all browsers)

5)Starts up fast.

6)Privacy control is good.

7)And one of the most important features-tabbed browsing.

8)browsing ''seems'' to be faster

9)intuitive interface.

On the whole Mozilla Firebird is the best browser out there.
