Its been a long time in Mouthshut , and no I am not saying bye, but just informing that its my hundredth review and I have enjoyed MS to its fullest , my highs at mouthshut ,when I had comments flowing and my lows , when people actually comment … oh you are new here is it, I have never read your review. But I have enjoyed writing every 100 that I have written and will continue enjoying the ones I write thereafter ..
Woman’s Era by Satya !!! , Hey this sounds surprising !!! , Well it is , I am indeed reviewing a Woman’s magazine. Why you may ask ? .Well , I have been “exposed ” to this magazine since Childhood … as this is my Mom’s Favorite Mag. Made Specially for the svelte, demure human species commonly known as “Females” , I have always been in awe of this magazine as they keep churning almost similar kind of articles fortnight after fortnight and still manage to hold interest.
This magazine is Edited published and printed by Paresh Nath and its been around entertaining the fairer ( and the darker) sex for more than 30 years. Magazines exclusively for women in India are not there in abundance, there is Savvy , there was Eve’s Weekly and Woman’s Era.
What is there in the Magazine
A good mix of Short Stories, Travel Locations, Some poems, articles on tackling ones life in general , Taking care of Children while growing up etc etc and of course Cooking which must form part of a woman’s magazine. All this coupled with some regulars like some general tips , personal problem tips sent by readers etc.
Most of the issues dish up a pleasant fare mixing interesting topics together. Most of the topics are related to health or how to take of your kids when they grow up etc. They have a Cookery special in the first issue of September and February , and connoisseurs like me get good cooking ideas from this.
There are around 5 to 6 short stories by Indian women authors , some of them are interesting ( I remember reading them as a kid ) and some of them are plain ok. I think this magazine has a lot of fans simply because it caters to their tastes, its got all under one roof coupled with some humour from the readers as well .
Bollywood can never be excused from any magazine and its not done here as well. We have a Bombay Filmdon column for all the news and gossips. There used to be a reviews section for movies , but it doesn’t show up nowadays.
The Verdict
The overall look and feel of the magazine is quite old fashioned. The colours , the designs makes it look like an 80’s magazine and the same must be improved to increase circulation. The models used in this magazine are , least to say quite bad, something has to be done to change them and their “I just drank Castor Oil ” kind of expressions.
A major content overall is needed as the magazine has not changed much in these 30 odd years.
But overall very much readable despite the shortcomings
