War of the Worlds
Tom Cruise is my favorite actor, Steven Spielberg my favorite director and Science Fiction is my favorite genre. And as for HG Wells, well, War of the Worlds is a classic. These are the only reasons one should see the movie…otherwise it could get to be a bit of a drag.
Admittedly, this fascinating story by HG Wells was turned into a visual fantasy by Spielberg. The enormous alien tripod machines trampling and destroying the earth, their slimy arms snaking about sucking up people into large metal baskets from where the aliens pick them up to drink their blood. Gross for those who don’t like blood and gore. Special effects of a kind only Spielberg can do but inspite of them, the movie dragged.
And as for poor Tom Cruise (Ray Ferrier) in the role of a man fighting to save his two children from the insect–like aliens - he was wasted in the movie. Oh yeah, he looked good but all he had to do was run from the aliens carrying his little girl in his arms. He did manage to blow up one or two of them but that was not what saved the world. The end is an anti-climax.
