Director-Mahesh Manji-reh-kar
This family trip ,called ''Viruddh'' revolves around three main characters Nerolac paints ,Western union money transfer and Zoom TV! The film is more of AD of these products !
Of the performances ,Nerolac paint bags the maximum number of opportunities to prove its versatility .It tempts you with its shining colours .Its magical .It is more lucky in a sense that everybody from Prem Chopra to Sharmila are painting their house with NEROLAC PAINTS !
Then comes WESTERN UNION MONEY TRANSFER ! WUMT is able to make its presence felt in a half baked role .Amitabh in one scene says ,''WUMT is great !''
In this world of film ,hoarding boards of ZOOM TV are seen everywhere right from court to airport .Great !
Oh my god ! Now I have to write something about supporting actors and story .
The story of 'Viruddh' revolves around Vidyadhar Patwardhan (Amitabh Bachchan). He is a happy retired man who has no qualms and no ambitions left unfulfilled.
Her wife Sumitra (Sharmila Tagore) befits him like a ring in her finger and she is as caring a wife as one would expect one's wife to be. Vidyadhar and Sumitra foresee their future in their son Amar (John Abraham). Amar is a happy go- lucky kind of boy and he has grown up with the values of the Patwardhan family and that's never to bend before injustice. The high values taught to Amar in his childhood land him in a situation where things go wrong and he gets killed Initially, Patwardhan looks shattered.
But, he is not a man of weak knees. He stands up to face the challenges that life has forced on him. He struggles against the prevailing system.
At long last, a twist in the tale sends you reeling-‘n’-squealing out of the extra-lengthy, snail-paced proceedings. Adding to the aggravation, is the camerawork that’s so jittery that the zip-pan-swishes might compel you to get an eye check-up.
Amitabh Bachchan is excellent, consistently flexible and humane. John and Anuskha are competent. Sanjay Dutt is first-rate .
Above all, Sharmila is perfect. Her effortless blend of conflicting emotions is what A-class acting is all about. Ms Sharmila is a diamond in this little gem of a movie. Never mind its flaws.
Serious stuff, yes, but it could have been more engaging in its treatment. The opening scenes in a police station, are especially amateurish. Certainly, it’s important to be earnest, but cinema demands a little more than that – like finesse, incisiveness and passion. At best, VIRUDDH is like a moral lesson re-told by a dull director.
If VIRUDDH is what you’re going to get more of at the movies, then you’d be better off trekking to the Himalayas to take sanyas. At least, there you can petition the Almighty: “Oh God, why did you do this to me? Whyyyy? Not fair, take me into your benevolent arms, take me away from this cruel earth, take me away…… now…. please…. please….please. Are you listening, God, dear God?”
Yup, Viruddh could have been entertaining. Sorry, it isn’t.
