VENTILATOR – A device running the family

Ventilator is the produced by Priyanka Chopra and directed by talented Rupesh Mapuskar, now I don’t need to say much about the eagerness surrounding the movie. The song Baba sung by Priyanka Chopra has moved people to tears and a true tribute to all the fathers out there. It just made the wait even more looongg.

This movie is about Kamerkar clan, one of the uncles Gaju kaka is down with an ailment about which no one has a clue. The concern is less about his health and more about other issues. The whole clan gathers and runs to the hospital to pay a visit to their ailing uncle that disturbs the preparations for Ganeshotsava out of gear and it is only a week away.

The Kamerkar family comes together to see their beloved Gaju kaka and meets Raja Kamerkar(Ashutosh Gowariker). It seems a lot like a family reunion as Raja meets many folks who has helped him grow up and some who hasn’t met or seen in a long time. Around all this meeting and greeting it is brought to focus that the timing of hospitalisation is very crucial. Kaka is on ventilator and Bappa is due to arrive in a week’s time. If something goes wrong, then the family will have to cancel the 10-days festival celebration and will be drowned in mourning.

Kaka’s son Prasanna(Jitendra Joshi), who is responsible to manage and setup all the festivities in his chawl, is worried and disturbed if they were to call off the preparations, it will directly affect his political stance and ambitions.

So, it’s not just kaka’s life but everyone else’s is entwined rhythmically with his.

Every character is so relatable and seems so true because you realise that they do exist in every family. There is his wailing wife(Sulabha Arya), an overlearned IIM son who is always aloof, an obese kid who gulped a coin during a magic trick, a matchmaker(Viju Khote), a North Indian neighbour, a Tupperware aunty, and a ‘Marathi manoos’ politician. They tickle and bring comic relief and it is funny because that’s exactly how you picture them in your head. And in real life as well.

Like every family, beneath the pleasantries underlie deeper issues. They bicker over topics like the distribution of royalty coming from selling of mangoes and construction of a toilet. Paying a visit to Gaju kaka is just an excuse for everyone to come together, talk about their issues and probably mend the broken bonds again.

Mapuskar takes you on a ride through a family that resembles every family. He introduces you to every character in the hospital and makes you sit with them. Amongst this whole chaos he simply puts forth and successfully conveys his message about a father-son relationship. As the movie draws close to the end, you can’t dislike anyone and that’s where Mapuskar wins with flying colours.

Jitendra Joshi and Sukanya Kulkarni Mone play their roles of son and daughter of Gaju kaka to perfection. Priyanka Chopra has a cameo appearance, and there are other remarkable performances as well.

Just a single thought itches the most is why didn’t the makers think of releasing this movie during Ganeshotsava.

Other than that, this film is mould around family ties. It’s an amazing journey that makes you realise that we too have this in our clan and leave with a satisfactory smile.
