My friend is a native of Karwar, When I travelled to Karwar with him earlier this year he was telling me that I would simply love the food of Upahar Darshini hotel situated in Karwar. He repeated the name of the place and praised it so much that by the time we reached Karwar, I wanted to visit the restaurant at the earliest.
Upahar Darshini is located near the Karwar Bus Stand. As you come out of the bus stand and move towards the junction you shall see one of the lanes with a board with Uphar Darshini painted on it and an arrow pointing towards Uphar Darshini restaurant. After visiting the place I realised that my friend's praise of the place was well deserved.
Upahar Darshini is a self service restaurant. You have to take the coupon from the cash counter and present it at the kitchen counter. When the item is ready it is given to you. The only demerit of this place is that there are no sitting arrangements and you have to eat standing. There are tables where you can place your dish and eat from it.
Upahar Darshini, being situated in North Kannada has only South Indian items on its menu. The masala dosa available there is one the best and authentic I ever had. There are also other items such as idli and vada sambar.Batata wada is also worth a try. The batata wada there is quite different from those available in Maharashtra. All items are served with hot sambar and coconut chutney.
The place is small and the items are limited. The place is always crowded due to affordable prices and high quality.Masala Dosa costs Rs 7 and Batata wada costs Rs 5. After you have had your fill with the snacks you can go for either Lassi or Rachana, a local soft drink available in Cola and Orange flavours.Rachana wil cost you Rs 5.
If you visit Karwar do visit Upahar Darshini. Highly recommended for South Indian food.
