The School of Liberal Studies will seem like a fraud from the first day. SoLS at UPES could be closing down soon. It will give you a sense of how scared we students are. The new management shut down the entire School of Modern Media after running it for 3–4 years. An entire school, with so many students in so many departments suddenly closed down.
Compared to Modern Media, liberal studies only has 19 students. They will close us down soon. The teachers are terrible. Worst than what you would get at some low fee paying Mukherjee Nagar coaching institutes. Most of them were rejected in all job interviews. They got the job because they were close to the current Vice Chancellor and Director of Liberal Studies.
You are better off studying from even online degree providers, than learning from the faculty here. You ask a question, and the faculty scroll on their mobile or call someone to find the answers. They can barely speak any English and are only seen clicking selfies around the campus all day long. Sometimes the faculty will make you stand and teach the one or two others present in the classroom. They will respond with, I learnt a lot today. There is a staffroom where you can see most of the faculty either sleeping or celebrating each other's birthday.
They initially hired global faculty including Shubhashis Gangopadhyay the Dean from Cornell. There were others from Cambridge, NUS, Heidelberg, Cardiff, Waseda. All of them have left. They sacked the Dean or perhaps forced him to resign, recently. Since then it is under the control of the management and their favourites. Most of these people are products of UPES or Delhi based colleges, and this is their first job and they were mostly rejected or thrown out of Amity like places before they joined UPES as life skills coaches.
The faculty was initially teaching courses like “how to avoid constipation” and “how to converse with Zombies”. They call these life skill courses. These are real courses, I kid you not. This is a compulsory school they call the School for Life. These faculty was parachuted down to Liberal studies, and replaced the international faculty.
Most of the international faculty have left or been thrown out since the University was unable to pay their salaries. Now they have the Rs 10000 a month life skills coaches, being passed of as professors. Do not trust the program names written on the website. Most of them have been closed down. You may be promised a lot but end up in a classroom with only one other student or if you are lucky, just yourself. In the latter scenario, take your money back and run as fast as you can.
How do I know?
I am stuck for the past two years in this cursed place. I will graduate soon. But I hope you do not end here.
