Review: Underworld - Mediocre at best
A werewolf versus Vampire flick ... sounds interesting...
Underworld is gone from the theatres here, so caught it on DVD...
Underworld is basically a slick film ... Werewolves versus Vampires...
The movie stars Kate Beckinsale.
The first thing that you expect from the movie having seen the promos and the posters that the movie will have lots of nicely done action sequences ... it disappoints...
I won't delve much into the story coz there isn't much of a story really...
The vampires are killing the werewolves and the werewolves are on the losing end... Desperately, the werewolves are trying to cross a werewolf and a vampire who will be stronger and more powerful than either of them...
The movie is very dark and dreary. How a vampire movie should be... The fact that the entire movie is shown in the night adds to this effect ... there is not a single daylight shot.
Kate Beckinsale stars as a vampire and is in the leading role.
For me, she was the only one who acted ... not brilliantly, but decent nevertheless... The other actors were mediocre and for the fact that there was not much acting to be done. She looks good in a skin tight leather getup (a la trinity from the matrix) and acts pretty okay as well.
The Soundtrack of the movie is the biggest disappointment.
Throughout the entire movie including the action sequences, the background music was pretty bad ... which in a way, negated the effect of the action sequences. Most of the sounds were as in the Matrix ... lots of metal squeaking and stuff...
The action sequences were another let down ... Nothing to get your adrenaline pumping. At most it was just a gun shootout (I have seen better in even mediocre movies) or werewolves devouring the vampires. There is a lot of blood spilling ... which I think is okay considering the theme of the movie.
The special effects according to me, were the only saving grace in the movie. The parts where they turn into vampires and werewolves and the jumping of high buildings thingy was pretty neat and looked nice.
Saying that, the effects weren't very subtle ... which good special effects should be... but it was good nevertheless.
The Story of the movie is mediocre with a little twists and turns here and there. At the end of the movie, you'll realise that the story is a very common Hollywood movie story ... revenge and all ... just with the characters changed.
The narration also leaves a lot of loose ends untied and you are left assuming quite a bit ... You don't quite feel satisfied once the movie is over.
Exit Exhale : The movie is a disappointment in many ways ... but still is worth a watch. Maybe they over-hyped it a lot. It’s a one time watch movie and you'll enjoy it only if you don’t expect much out of it ...
