Ujjain is best known as a religious city as MahaKumbh mela happened there sometime back and I saw its coverage on TV when Uma Bharti was Chief minister of Madya Pradesh.
Recently I got a chance to visit this city, we started from Jhansi and caught Malwa Express early morning which was some hours late, it reached Ujjain at 12pm and we boarded a small hotel near the railway station only for bathing and changing. It was good enough for that. From there we proceeded to MahaKaleshwar temple which is a major attraction there. It was heavily crowded outside the temple and if you go from normal queue, it will be hours to reach main shivling, so we opted for VIP darshan and bought its ticket and before entering that way, you've to deposit each and every thing in locker room except prasad. We deposited our stuff there and then proceeded for VIP darshan from a back way, its downstairs and every where you look, there are lots and lots of LCD screens which are telecasting live the shivling and puja down there. You've to walk in corridors and after some time you reach the main temple, there are metal detectors everywhere and then you finally reach a auditorium kind of thing and the main shivling is very far away, its a huge shivling, a pandit which brought you here will do the puja for you and you can watch it on LCD.After that you can receive your prasad, when you come back from another way, there is a person who will put a wooden thing on your forehead, after that you can see OM written on your forehead.
We came back from there to hotel and as we had no time to visit other tourist destinations there, we proceeded towards Indore after a brief tea and snack session where we had to attend a wedding in evening. On the way, I noticed Ujjain is a quiet and sleepy town and highway towards Indore is pretty good.
I hope the review is of some help for anyone thinking of visiting Ujjain.
Thanks for reading my review.
