1998 was a GREAT year for Hindi music. It was a musical year, most of the hit films had melodious music, and even the flops had a few sweet musical surprises.

Music directors Jatin-Lalit gave huge hits, while Rehman kept his position. Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan were the most successful singers. It was also a good year for albums. Instead of remix and cheap videos, original songs and decent videos were being made.

HITS

Here are some low-profile tracks that are very nice-

20)Pyar kiya to nibhana- Major Saab

It is a romantic song that goes like- ‘kehta hain pal pal tumse hoke dil yeh diwana’. It has a perfect tune.

19) Gali mein aaj chaand nikla- Zakhm

This is a pleasantly melodious song. Alka Yagnik has done a great job; her sweet voice does complete justice to this tune.

18)Dola dola- Doli sajake rakhna

I think this was good film; it is unfortunate that it flopped. The music was average, some copied tracks and some new ones. I don’t know whether this melodious song is copied or original. It is easy on ears.

17) Ek shararat- Duplicate

‘Ek Shararat’ is fresh, peppy, and surprisingly simple. Its start is a bit weird, but stanzas are very beautiful.

SUPERHITS

‘Satya’- the film that challenged the norms of filmmaking was released in 1998.

16) Sapne mein milti hain- Satya

Satya is a shocking, violent movie. There was hardly any scope for music. But ‘sapne mein milti hain’ became a huge hit. It is a funny dance number.

Satya was an exception, 1998 was the year of ‘feel-good’ family dramas and romantic comedies. Those movies had excellent music.

15) Title song- Pyar kiya to darna kya

14) Diwana main chala- Pyar Kiya to darna kya

These are typical romantic songs- quite fast and catchy, yet very melodious.

13) Tum paas aye- Kuch Kuch Hota Hain

12) Tuze yaad na meri aayi- Kuch Kuch Hota Hain

Jatin Lalit continued their good work, with excellent music in KKHH. Its title song is very melodious and easy on ears. ‘Tuze yaad na meri.’ is a sad song- one of the better songs from KKHH.

ALBUMS

1998 was great year for music albums and many such songs gave tough competition to film songs.

11) Purani jeans aur Guitar – Private album

This is a sweet song about remembering college days. It has wonderful lyrics, and a catchy tune.

10) Yaad Piya ki aane lagi- Private album

A cute song by Dandiya Queen Falguni Pathak! Her sweet voice suits such romantic songs. It is a peppy number, with perfect combination of melody and rhythm.

9) Chui mui si tum lagti ho- Yeh hain Prem

Yeh hain Prem by Milind Ingle is wonderful collection of romantic songs. Each song is very beautiful. This is the first song of the album. It is a cute song, having brilliant music and vocals by Milind Ingle.

Yeh Hain Prem has 10 sweet romantic songs.

8) Main tumhe ha bas tumhe chaha karu- Yeh hain Prem

It was not as famous as ‘chui mui’, but it’s a sweet song, with perfect lyrics, music and vocals.

ALL TIME MEGA HITS

7) Awaaz do hum ko hum kho gaye- Dushman

6)Pyar ko ho jaane do- Dushman

Both are soft slow romantic tracks. Lata Mangeshkar’s voice graces the songs, and that is the main reason why I like these songs.

5) Jab Kisi ki taraf dil- Pyar to hona hi tha

4) Tu meri gal maan ja- Pyar to hona hi tha

This film had a great soundtrack by Jatin Lalit. ‘Jab kisi ki taraf’ is a slow romantic track with impressive lyrics, and the other one is a traditional marriage song.

3)Chal chaiyya chaiyya- Dil se

It is a typical Rehman song- full of passion and rhythm. Gulzar’s lyrics are very unusual. It is a dance number, still played often at parties and dance competitions.

2)Aati kya Khandala- Ghulam

Yeh bohot solid gaana hain, Apun ko pasand hain kyon ki yeh gaana zara hat ke hain.

1)A ajanabi tu bhi kabhi- Dil se

It is a beautiful romantic song by Rehman, written by Gulzar. It is one of Udit Narayan’s best songs. After 5 years, the song is still very fresh and passionate. I think it was one of best songs ever made.
