The treasure of hindi film songs is something not comparable to any other treasure in the world. It has been changing from time to time. We will not be doing justice to any of the eras if we start comparing them with each other. Each era had its own beauty. Here in this review, I am not mixing the two ages. I am listing 20 best songs of both the ages.

First came the golden age where music and instruments did not matter very much. They were just to support the singers. What mattered was the voice and the tune. My 20 favorites of that age are-

20 .Piya tu ab to(Carvaan)? Nobody could have sung this extremely difficult song better than Asha ji. This was the song that actually set apart Lata didi from Asha ji.

  1. Ek chatur naar(Padosan)- An all time favorite song of all times for people of all ages. A beautifully sung and composed song with a blend of filmi as well as classical music.

  2. Ae malik tere bande(Do Aankhen Barah Haath)- A fantastically written song. It has such a deep meaning inside. Drums would not have suited the song!

  3. Roop tera mastana(Aradhana)- One of the bests by Kishore da. Any doubts?

  4. Aankhon hi aankhon mein(CID)- A cool song as it is called these days. One of the most enjoyable songs of all times.

  5. Pyar kiya to Darna kya(Mughle Azam)- One of the blockbusters of the golden era. A very well written, sung, choreographed and pasteurized song.

  6. Bole re papihara(Guddi)- A song that could beat Lata by Vani Jayram. This was where Lata did politics to push Vani off the race.

  7. Gori tera gaon(Chitchor)- Too good Yesudas!

  8. Tere bina zindagi se(Aandhi)- One of the bests of Lata didi.Great lyrics and great music and a great film.

11.Pyar diwana hota hai(Kati Patang)- The first old song that I listened to and I fell in love with.

10.Beqaraar karke hamein(Bees Saal Baad)

9.Aanewala pal(Golmaal)

  1. Humko man ki shakti(Guddi)

  2. In aankhon ki masti(Umrao Jaan)

  3. Tum pukar lo(Khamoshi)

  4. Chaand fir nikla(?)

  5. Babuji dheere chalna(?)

  6. Rahe na rahe hum(Mamta)

  7. Aaeye meherbaan(Howrah Bridge)

1.Kuch dil ne kaha(Anupama)- I don?t know how many will agree with this one but I love this song more than any other one.

Now if enter the new era, along with voice, music and instruments mattered more than wordings. Here are some of the real good ones.

  1. Khamoshiyan gungunane lagin( 1 2 ka 4)

  2. Kehna hi kya(Bombay)

  3. Jab kisi ki taraf dil(Pyar to Hona hi Tha)

  4. Boondon se baatein(Thakshak)

  5. Tu mile dil khile(Criminal)

15.Yeh jo zindagi hai/Ishwar allah(1947 Earth)

  1. Dil se re(Dil Se)

  2. Ek ladki thi(Love You Hamesha)- Many of my friends might not remember this song but this one was a real master piece by AR Rahman and Kavita Krishnamurthy. This lady excels!

12.Dil mera ek tara(16 December)- Remember?

  1. Dheeme dheeme(Zubeidaa)

10.Muqala mukabala(Humse Hai Muqabala)-Changed the whole meaning of rock songs.

  1. Jaado bhari aankhon(Dastak)- A great song. The best by Udit Narayan till date . Really!

  2. Kismat se tum(Pukar)- High pitch is something here,

7.Aye ajnabi(Dil Se)- Uditji, you are tooooo good.

6.Pyar hua chupke se(1947 a love story)- Kavita, your first break!

5.Hum tumse na kuch keh paaye(Ziddi)- Please, I hope at least somebody remembers this wonderful song by Chitra and Hariharan.

4.Kya kare kya na/Tanha tanha(Rangeela)- No words to express.

3.Yeh dil sun raha hai(Khamoshi-new)- Oh! Please, somebody be on my side for this one. It was an excellent song sung wonderfully by Kavitha Krishnamurthy. One of the best sung songs by anyone. Notice the pitches she reaches without any difficulty and the deepness in her voice. It might not be sweet but has emotions.

2.Saathiya/Chupke se(Saathiya)

1.Yeh haseen Vaadiyan(Roja)

This was my opinion, criticism is welcome.

P.S- Trust lists, am I welcome?
