Now now now, the year has come to an end and it is time to know the twenty best performances. I must say it was a year of Experimental films, no formula movies, and above all a year where everyone tried to perform better than their STAR Status. Yes, don’t you guys think that the Star status which an actor gets from one movie binds him or her in an image which they unable to break throughout their career. Well, this year so some great NO- TYPICAL hero movies.
Some come backs and yes good humour, so to say! Like we had Hrithik in Koi Mil Gaya, Arshad in Waisa Bhi Hota Hai- II and Munna Bhai M.B.B.S, Manoj Bajpai in Pinjar, Urmila in both Pinjar and Bhoot. Well well now here is the list. BEFORE YOU READ. Apun ka rule sunley babu ya bibi: Pehla Rule: Don’t fight with me why have I chosen him or her. Doosra: It is your wish if you want to follow the first rule. Teesra: New Year Happy ho sabka, boley to bilkul JHAKKAS!!
1. Urmila (Bhoot)- “bhoot hoon main” this reminded me of the song in a B- grade film “Kabristaan” and so I was just thinking why such a song. As it was blessed with the direction of Ram Gopal Verma I thought ‘may be the movie is better than the song’. Movie released and being an ardent Urmila fan we decided to make it to the Priya cinema to watch BHOOT. Wow! I was shaken and scared. It did manage to scare me. As she got scared the audience did and as she cried the audience didn’t know how to react, as she was so simple and real. She brought veggies from the market like a housewife, yet she did not have to clad her self in a saree. She would call up her husband and speak to him like a normal housewife still she did not need to use the ‘suniye ji’ tone. She was so real that it was hard to believe. Urmila did not do anything special for the character as she said she just tried to be Swati a normal girl with dreams and love for her husband. Kudos to her! Though she was working with actors like Victor Banerjee and Rekha yet keeping herself as the best. If she was the central character of the movie then she made sure that she was the main lead by her acting prowess.
2. Irfaan Khan (Haasil)- Have you ever seen a more dreadful, dangerous, and helpful villain than him. Well I simply loved the character and the way it was treated by the director- Tigmanshu Dhulia and actor- Irfaan Khan. Irfan Khan ko haasil hua role aur lot of flak. It seemed to be tailor made for this actor who hails from theatre. His every expression and reaction was so well timed and worked out that the audience was left spell bound. He really deserves to do better roles and characters, which can help him, grow as an actor and not a star.
3.Victor Banerjee (Bhoot)- A father who knows that his daughter is not going to survive for too long, and he knows that the patient he is treating has something paranormal going on but cannot help and do the medical treatment. The perturbed father gets message from his daughter’s soul through the possessed Swati. Just check out the way he looks at Urmila’s character, when he sees her for the first time.
4. Hrithik Roshan (KMG)- Oh me gosh! I can’t believe it I have him on my list that too on the 4th rank. I really liked his shedding of his STAR image and being the character for once in his lifetime. It seems papa Roshan does some JAADU to him and his performance. I had really thought that it would be a lousy movie with him being the HERO type and the Indians suck at making a science fiction. Hey! Guess these guys wanted to prove everyone wrong. Perhaps that is how life is unpredictable.
5. Juhi Chawla (3 Deewarien)- Though I so wanted to give it to her for Jhankaar Beats, but my heart said that she did not only give an excellent performance in 3 Deewarein she also broke away from the mould of being THE HEROINE. Nagesh Kuknoor definitely deserves and applause for making Juhi perform in a certain manner, which made everyone think that the role was absolutely Just for Juhi. The scene where she threatens her husband is still so fresh in mind. She was mind blowing!
6. Manoj Bajpai (Pinjar)- This one is such a good actor that you can never take him like a filmee actor. He has his roots in Drama and that is exactly what comes across when you watch him emote with those eyes in Pinjar. The guilt, love and respect for womanhood all at the same time. Definitely Urmila was there to make the chemistry and timing successful, but it was Manoj Bajpai all the way whose mannerisms spoke volumes about his talent.
7. Ajay Devgan (Gangajal)- If there is someone who has emerged as an actor and evolved with every movie he performed in is This One. I’m yet to see him perform in a comedy movie. As police personnel he was awesome and I was awestruck. You know, there are very few whose performance helps their colleague’s acting too. Did u notice the change in and conviction in Gracy Singh’s acting in this movie? The best scene was definitely the one where he tries to stop all the villagers from killing the crooks.
8. Rajpal Yadav (Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon)- One thing similar in Raja, Mr. India and Beta is that all of them were Hero oriented subject, but the female lead was showered with all the importance and praises. Same thing happened with MMDBCH, but things got reversed this time. Even though the movie’s lens close character was Antra Mali a village belle, Rajpal Yadav left no stone unturned in giving the character the earthy feel required. He was truly the man of the soil. Very helpful, has no- concern for self, ready to do everything for love. Rajpal was so convincing in being a Head- over- Heels in love in his own sweet manner.
9. Boman Irani and Saif Ali Khan (Darna Mana Hai)- This was some combo to look forward. I remembered my dad (miss him a lot) telling me “Though I love cigarettes, I still love that story for the performances by both the actors.” Which, was the reason why went to watch that movie on a cinema hall. OH! It blew me off completely. Boman was weird in the beginning and then you suddenly start believing in him as the story progresses. Saif was distressed and you thought that either he will die or run away, but the way Saif acted in the end trying to give the same expressions as Boman and also watching Cartoon movies was excellent. Talk about performances this was one movie. And this was one STORY! Now, see how both of them have changed and Saif was seen doing only good job after this movie, like LOC, KHNH, and recently in EHT. Boman had his hands full with bouquets for Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.
