TROLLS – Blind with colours of Happiness

Trolls are known to be the happiest mythical creatures known to every kid(not in India, sadly!). Dreamworks is back serving happiness with more colours and cotton candy hair. After How to train your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda, here is yet another movie that lurks at your heart and asks you to be happy, no matter what, find it in yourself.

This movie is based on Trolls, the dolls created in 1959 by Danish toymaker Thomas Dam, which was famous in the 60s and 70s for their wide grins that made a dent on their cheeks, marble eyes and candy floss disheveled hair. Good thing it does not revolve around Troll Dolls completely from the 60s and are of this age; new, fresh and perky – if not too much.

Well, here we have a Troll Princess Poppy(voiced by Anna Kendrick), who is happy, colourful and hugs her people when the clock strikes. And then we have Branch(Voiced by Justin Timberlake), who is grey, disgruntled, bored and a joykill. They live in a troll village together but still are very different from each other.

All happy colours staying together happily, bright and sunny until Bergen, a huge ugly, colourless and morbidly depressed species who eats trolls as an anti-depressant, comes and steals away few trolls. Then Poppy takes it upon herself to save her people and she can’t do that herself so she takes Branch with her.

Their journey towards Bergen’s village kind of reminds me of Frodo and Samwise’s journey to Mordor. But on this journey, Branch is the one suffering due to Poppy’s incessant singing and a scrapbook that shall save her people(note the sarcasm). While in Bergen’s village, he is preparing for a feast for his kingdom where trolls are going to be special ingredients.

Will Poppy and Branch be able to save their friends and bring them back happily?

Can Bergen become happy without his dose of anti-depressants?

Well, that makes the crux of the movie and is total fun for kiddddooss. Ahem, and parents as well. Dreamworks made sure that parents get their fill of fairy tale journey and a lesson from a kid’s movie.

The happiness is there, find it in yourself.

Director Mike Mitchell has kept the background and jokes in the constant flux. The comebacks by Branch and retorts his character offers are giggle-worthy for kids. We have been served with Dreamworks movies those have achieved rarefied levels of feelings, imagination, and head-boggling audacity. Trolls aim higher and sails over their own ambitions.

The trolls dance and sing about happy days, Colours, and Can’t stop the Feeling(of course). There are so many peppy soundtracks made up of weird but fantastically fitting songs from Simon and Garfunkel, 70s disco, The Notorious B.I.G, and even Lionel Ritchie. The fact that this was created by Justin Timberlake, they are going to be hit sing-alongs too soon.

Trolls are cuddly, cute, with wide grins that can split your face into a half, and their notorious hair that can be or do anything. It is made for kids keeping in mind the accompanying parent/s and made slightly tolerable. So, for the love of your kid, watch this movie and enjoy the happiness that seeps through your lovejoy.

I just wish trolls on the internet also spread happiness instead of suffering.
