I own a Maruti Esteem VX( Non MPFI- 1999 model). which is presently clocking a whopping 1, 77, 000 kms. I fitted the LPG kit at 1, 20, 000 kms. The experience is great over the 57, 000 Kms on gas. Performance is not an issue as long as you get the LPG kit serviced every 7- 8 thousand kms to remove carbon deposits. Just ensure that the spark plugs are clean and the airfilter is not clogged. The total amount I have spent on LPG servicing over the last 3 years does not exceed Rs 2500/-, which includes changing the rubber diaphram once at Rs 800/-.
Tuning is the key to LPG performance. Have a good mechanic who understands LPG tuning do the job, most pertrol and deisel mechanics know nothing about LPG and just pretend to tune it leading to lack of performance. Please note that the LPG and petrol tuning is independent of each other and is to be done by repective specialists.
I drive 70 kms everyday in peak Mumbai traffic and go on long drives during weekends in hilly terrain. The experience has been very good on LPG while cruising. The engine noise is almost non existent. The pickup drops along very steep climbs on LPG, so switch on to petrol if you notice that the rpm going up without commensurate increase in power.
Contrary to the popular belief I have had no problems starting the car on LPG, but should you anticipate starting on very chilly winter mornings start on petrol.
It is always a good idea to run 2-5 kms per week on petrol, that way the petrol pipeline will remain clear from any possible clogging. Tune the engine whenever necessary to run on petrol as LPG is not available across the country. Keep 10-12 litres of petrol in your tank at any time , otherwise it will start rusting. Top up your petrol tank and check pertol tuning before commencing an inter state drive.
LPG is clean fuel, there is no chance for contamination of LPG, your spark plugs and engine oil will thus have a longer life.
If you have a 60 litre tank like what I have, do not fill more than 50 litres of LPG, that way it is very safe in summer temperatures too. Always use authorised LPG kits and spare parts as it pays off in the long run.
I plan doing another 25, 000 kms on LPG before I dispose off my car. The LPG kit has paid for itself many times over. Overall a great experience on LPG with a mileage of 7.8 kms/ litre LPG peak Mumbai traffic with a/c on and 11-12 kms/ litre on highways on a cruising speed of 90 kms/ hr with a/c.
