Having backpacked for the last 14 months I can safely tell you about my experience with life in a hostel.
When you live in a hostel you will be sharing your bedroom as it is, with strangers and friends from foreign lands, the most important thing to remember is respect, even if you can't speak the same language.
When living with other people we have to remember that many of them are on different sleeping schedules than our own, so it is important to give them the consideration that they deserve, ie. not making a racket while they are resting, remember they have also paid for the accommadation and they too are entitled to a quiet sleep.
While your roomates are sleeping here are some things to DO and NOT to do!
1) Do not allow the door to slam, close it quietly behind you!
2) Do not go in and out of the room more than a couple times, plan what you need for the bathroom/toilet/shower and take it with you!
3) Do NOT blow dry your hair while someone in your room is sleeping!
4) Do not bring plastic bags while backpacking, ziplock bags will better contain your shampoo/conditioner and sunscreen, and ensure that it doesn't end up all over the inside of you backpack, plastic bags sound a thousand times louder while you are sleeping, and is a big Backpacker no-no.
5) Do not attempt to wake fellow backpackers up unless they have requested it, you don't know how badly they need their rest!
6) Do not mix Canadians up with Americans, we do not like this, and do not find it humourous. Many German, and English tourists think that this is very funny, it is in fact NOT.
Hope this helps, I may add more to this later so don't rate it just yet!
