Birth control pills are one among the most widely used contraceptive method. It is mostly used as a spacing method by the couples.

I will briefly mention how it works. These pills usually contain two hormones progesterone and estrogen. These hormomes are naturally present in females, but at high level these prevent ovulation through negative feedback. Thus release of egg from ovary is prevented.

Here are few tips and information on birth control pills.

1) First of all remember these pills do not have any long term effects on contraception. So if a women consumes these pills, pregnancy can be prevented and when she stops these, she will have normal menstrual cycle, thereby can conceive.

2) These pills do not disrupt menstruation completely. It just prevents ovulation/release of ovum.

3) Oral contraceptive pills have to be taken regularly without missing them for these to be effective. Starting from day 5 of menstruation it has to be taken for 21 days continuously.

4) Take your pills regularly everyday at same time preferably at night so you won't forget it.

5) If you miss the pill for one day, take the pill as soon as you remember on the next day. And also take that day's pill as regular schedule at night.

6) If you miss the pill for 2 days, take two pills the day you remember and 2 pills the next day. And then continue as regular.

7) If missed for 3 days or more, then it is better to go for an alternative contraceptive method.

8) There can be few side effects like spotting/bleeding, breast tenderness, nausea, vomiting. These usually stop within first two months of use. Estrogen may also cause increased risk of blood clots especially in smokers. So if you notice any major change in body like abdominal pain or lump, its better to contact the doctor.

9) It is better to consume iron tablets in the remaining 7 days when you are not consuming the oral pills. These tablets usually come along with the oral pills.

10) These pills are available under 2 names, Mala-N and Mala-D. Mala-N is suppilied by government free of cost.

11) And finally not to mention, the oral pills are best recommend for those who can remember to take these regularly. Those who have difficulty in remembering may go for alternative methods like intauterine device- Copper T etc.
