''Let your boat of life be light, packed with only what you need - a homely home and simple pleasures, one or two friends, worth the name, someone to love and someone to love you, a cat, a dog, and a pipe or two, enough to eat and enough to wear, and a little more than enough to drink.....''
Memorable lines by none other than Jerome K. Jerome from ''Three Men in a Boat ...to say nothing of the dog.''
After reading these lines, anyone would be tempted to read the book.
Philip G. Hamerton wrote :''Have you ever observed that we pay much more attention to a wise passage when it is quoted than when we read it in the original author?''
Very true indeed.
This book, written long, long ago in another century evokes strong reactions from the readers.
Either you love it or you hate it!
The storyline is a vague one where three friends (and dog) go on a rowing trip on the Thames and camp out at night. It's a long and winding tale where the writer digresses all the time to narrate incidents, some funny but mostly not-so-funny.It is full of long and dreary tracts. It will make you so drowsy that you're most likely to miss the subtle humour. To be able to enjoy the humour one has to carefully read every word.Only then will it make you smile, every once in a while.
An excellent sedative for the insomniac!
Keep a copy at your bedside. A few pages at bedtime will do the trick.
No adverse reactions!
