Chris Gardener (Will Smith), his wife and son were on the edge of being homeless. They sunk in their life savings and souls into a business, selling heart machines door to door to Doctors.

Every day, Chris dropped his son off at daycare and schlepped his machine all around town, up and down every hill, on the subway, trying to find someone, anyone who would by his wares.

His wife, (Thandie Newton), a factory worker finds herself frustrated with her life and leaves Chris and their son, who fend for themselves. Could it get worse? Yes, they lose their apartment, then their motel room, with the last penny saved going to the Internal Revenue Service for back taxes.

They experience every possible impediment in between and imaginable. Your heart will sink with every blow; and with every blow, Chris somehow maintains his composure for his five-year old son.

While literally battling for his life, Chris takes a position as an intern with a Fortune 500 stock trading firm. Because he must be in line each day by 5 O’clock, he makes his phone calls faster and more accurate than all the other competing Interns.
