A heritage in itself, the newspaper has a century old history, with some very illustrious writers and coloumnist, which include Rudyard Kipling and winston churchil. This daily can take pride in not succumbing to the marketing blitzkrieg and maintained the sanctity of news.
However, it has paid the price of its doggedness and its failure to change with time took toll of its readership, circulation and eventually its sustainability. It came off from the brink of closure and to make it possible, it required an iron determination from members of its core team including the editor and owner Chandan Mitra.
But to say it as the only independent daily will be a big mistake.
During the days of its struggle for survival, owner of the newspaper seems to have taken too much help from some BJP leaders and now that its out of trouble, its time for paying the party back for its favours. And u can feel it once u read its editorial and op-ed page.
