Anil Sharma who gave us Gadar comes up with another offering this time.It is somewhat more better and polished than the previous outing with Sunny Deol. Here, Sunny plays Arun Verma an agent who is out to foil the plans of a group of Pakistani guys who are hell bent on building a nuclear device.Among them is a Maulana and the head of Pakistan's intelligence agency ISI.
The story sounds very predictable and we have the sense of deja vu once again as the story unfolds.Sunny is the master of disguises who keeps on being one step ahead of his detractors. He goes to the border area in Kashmir and gets involved with the local girl Reshmi played by Preity Zinta. He gets the sudden idea that she can be turned into a spy and sent across the border and give him useful intelligence.Which proves to be his undoing.Because, she gets discovered and is on the run.And after that all hell breaks loose,as she is sought to be killed on their marriage reception.
She is given up for dead and our Hero proceeds to romance a lady doctor now, in Canada, all in the name of the country. She happens to be the daughter of Zakaria, played by the very suave Kabir Bedi, who is one of the collaborators for the sinister cabal. And here too, hell breaks loose. Our Hero does not seem to have the luck of a lover. His ladies seem to be getting out of his arms!!!
But,not to worry. The writers of the story always have an ace up their sleeves. The spy Reshmi is alive and she is there to be with our Hero in the end after so many obstacles placed in his way, namely runaway trains, a jump from the Swiss mountains, avalanches and what have you.But all's well that's ends well.He gets his girl in the end and all the nasties are dead.
Now,after a long time Sunny has not shouted at anyone in this movie and this is a refreshing change.I was cringingly waiting for the moment when he would leap and shout at someone, but nothing seemed to happen.Good for him and for us all.He has given a fairly decent performance in this movie.Preity Zinta is her usual dependable self too.Amrish Puri as the ISI chief hams his way through.Rajpal Yadav is being noticed more and more in Hindi movies nowadays and he has a couple of nice cheerful lines in the movie. He has a nice comic timing.
In this movie, director Anil Sharma tries to do something new and almost succeeds. He has come up with an engrossing storyline and though you know what is gonna happen,he still makes you get engrossed in the proceedings. The set designs are grand and opulent. The tempo in the movie is well maintained. The songs are mediocre as is the music by Uttam Singh.None of the zing that he showed in Dil To Paagal hai.The melody is just not there. The crash, bang, slam routine is all there aplenty.Sunny Deol's jump from atop the cliff deserves special mention. The man has guts to do those kind of stunts. The demolition sequence of the wedding venue where Sunny and Preity are engaged is pretty well shot.
All in all, a pretty decent movie. You can take your family along to see it,as there are no vulgar dances nor brutal violence as such.Which is a blessing, because you do not get to see movies without these two things cropping up.Go see it, and do not expect too much and you will be a happy person.
