Nothing Ruffles These Birdies. Review on The Angry Birds Movie

I never would have thought about that one day I will be talking about birds and pigs, in a single sentence. But after learning some structural aspects from the franchise game The Angry Birds, it made me wonder how the game would look on a big screen, seriously, Angry Birds on big screen, that’s like a dream come true for any gaming-maniac.

The movie is about a flightless bird Red(Jason Sudeikis) who is not-so-happy camper, is grouchy, easily irritable and bout-prone. Other jovial and peace-living flightless birds of Bird Island can do no more with his mood swings and makes him join anger management class. Red, unwittingly, joins the class conducted by Matilda(Maya Rudolph) and includes Chuck(Josh Gad), black birdie Bomb(Danny McBride) and growling Terrence(growling Sean Penn).

The untimely arrival of ship manned by pigs disturbs the serenity of Bird Island. Red’s house gets destroyed and he immediately becomes suspicious of these hogging pigs. The pigs distract the birdies with parties and gifts, as they keep their hungry eyes on unhatched eggs. Red’s suspicion turns out to be true and his anger helps them to fight back against pigs. Red and his friends embark on avian invasion on these egg thieves and is supported by his idol Mighty Eagle(Peter Dinklage).

Talking about it on a bigger screen, this animation movie needs more of animatism. The fighting scenes have all the paraphernalia that we have seen in the video game – ships, crates of TNT, birds being sling on in the air and toppling over structures and green pigs. There are scenes when Hollywood mythical movies like Gods of Egypt and 300 are being porked for fun.umm, poked for fun.

The Angry Birds movie directed by Clay Katis and Fergal Reilly, is thinly scripted and snow balls to grab any attention. Obvious pig and chicken puns like Free Rage Chicken, pig named John Hamm and Hamnesty International add a tad bit of comic relief here and there.

The only things that scruffs off some boredom are the ‘stars’ voices with swagger. But there was not much to keep my interest rolling for what-happens-next or simple comedy. It is childish and cute though, but predictable. This movie may help in resurging the game but lacks the luster of it.
