Most of the titles on MS are supposed to be self explanatory rather cryptic.
Easy Listening? Hmmm. Listening while you are fast asleep or listening without having to tune the Radio station or
Listening to music on players without any trouble.? Whatever!
Let me first give credit to Mr. Yogi of MS, Anuj. for giving me an idea(this is second one consecutive) to write something on MS in spite of realising that I have other priorities than letting out my frustation here.
Neways, firstly, when I was child Hmmmm. lets me be fair. when I was young(early teens onwards), easy listening for me was finishing my homework with some music going on in the background. Doesn’t matter what kind of but something soothing & should go on forever. Then in college, it was music during midnight. then when working it was music when at work.
Now when am in this place of confusion, music keeps me in happy mood while driving to work or driving just for the heck of it. In conclusion, Easy listening music for me is something that you can listen to without falling to sleep or without getting a thought to skip the song but at the same time totally enjoying the lyrics, music, philosophy and admiring the composition/orchestration and singing. So here goes my list. no particular order nor the only TEN.
Appreciate if you want to add some or rather share some of your phavrutes(damn Daak spoiled me) so that I can add to my playlist.
-Lukka Chuppi. from RDB.
This one goes to all the Mothers who are reading this review or otherwise. on Mother’s Day. Idk how can there be a Mother’s(ONE) day. Every day is a Mother’s Day. There is no day that can be imagined without a Mother.
How I wish LataJi lends her voice to such songs more often than . ok ok. I am nobody. Somehow I feel she deserves more of songs like this one or the O Palan haare . from Lagaan.
The fact of the matter is Rahman+lataJi and Maddy+Rehman(this time Waheeda) suit perfect for the background voices as well as on screen.
Another soothing, terribly romantic, easy listening in the truest sense is the Tu Bin Batayee from RDB. In order to enjoy that song, one has to be outside oneself. in Bambaiyya language Summadi mein hone ko Mangta.
-O Ri Chori. sung by Vasundhara das, Alka & Udit / Music by Rahman
The inclusion of this song in the movie kind of gives me a feel if Ashutosh/Aamir had made up to go till Oscars even before Lagaan became a hit. I mean, the song is a wonderful way to capture the attention of desi and bideshi/videshi(Doc. you have made me so consious.). Rahman is simply amazing mixing up bailgaadi ki jhan jhan(clearly audible in iPod) and Sarangi when Gauri and Bhuvan singing carefree in hindi and suddenly it changes to Piano when Elizabeth starts singing along. When I first heard the song in PVR, was struggling to understand what was she singing. It was like an Opera(especially when Vasundhara ends with I am in Love for Sureeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.). Excellent Vasundhara, peculiar Udit’s hasmukh voice(he is such a jolly singer one can imagine even with his voice) and ever romantic Alka’s voice.
-Piya Haji Ali. sung by KG Mustafa, MG Mustafa, Rahman & Shrini / Music by Rahman
Rahman again. simply superb. This guy has done to music industry in India so much that the magnitude of his achievements will keep the music lovers in India busy for a long time now. He has revolutionised the way Indian music can be applied. He needs another special review. Not me though(Aha! saved you all. Isn’t it?)
Hundreds of Qawallis have been composed in Indian movies before, but Rahman comes close to originality of such singing, Mostly because, he maintains the originality by letting the traditional singers of such songs render their voice and he orchestrates around with a rhythm and devotion only Rahman knows How to?.
The only other song on Haj I remember was on Amitabh from coolie sung by Shabbir.(I know am going to get brickbats for mentioning Nasal Shabbir). but after listening to this song, I literally deleted that coolie song(Idk why it was lying in my collection in the first place, may be because I used to like Rishi Kapoor’s songs so much that I collected all of his and this one got tagged along) BTW, philosophical lyrics too.
kiske Dil Mein Lya Chupa Hain Sab Tumhe Maalum Hain.
-Chand Jaise Mukhde Pe. sung by Yesudas / music by ravindra
From my collection of hindi songs of Yesudas, 3 of his songs can be labelled as easy listening(still have to figure out what the heck does that mean?). But yes the other two which lost the race are Maana Ho Tum Behadh Haseen, aise Burey Hum Bhi Nahin.(a song every guy loves to sing to a even good looking eligible girl) and Gori Tera Gaon Bada Pyaara, Main tho gaya Maara from chitchor
Yesudas needs a special mention as the way he uses the Ghunghata(a peculiar Hindi in that part). in an otherwise shudha Hindi song. With all the public(no peepal anymore) moving to Metros, these songs will become like the sanskrit verses.;-)
Sab Teetiyan Ka Chandrama Jo Dekhna Chaho Aaaj.
Dheere Dheere Ghunghata. Sarkavo Sartaj.
The song praises the beauty of Rameswari, the female lead. Unfortunaley, the actress does not have any such song to her credit later anytime(for that matter so much of importance) inspite of being the only actress in Indian cinema history to have gotten 21 blind offers after the success of this movie but not one successful later.;-) Koi baat nahin. we will remember you as the girl friend of Guru(Anil Dhawan) in Nukkad serial.
- Chandi Jaisa Rang Hain Tera, sone Jaise baal.
As I mentioned in my Remixes review, remixes are sometimes good but the success rate of liking remixes is very minimal. same thing with Video songs. But this one stands out among the zillions of Balle Balles. The first time I watched it, I was relieved they didn’t screw it. Pankaj Udhas’ Ahista Kije Baatein is a soft likeable one too. But this is way better and you feel like listening to it over and over again.
For those who want to catch up this video online again.

- Dheeme Dheeme gaaon.Haule Haule gaaon. Tere Liye Piya. from Zubeidaa
Awesome!. Was humming this song for a long time after coming out of the theatre. Immediately next day, bought the cassette to be heard in a loop making it a compulsory song for any passenger in my vehicle.
-Gurus of Peace.Nuisrat Fateh ali Khan & Rahman
Before this song, I heard Nusrat fateh ali khan in some other songs but was not as impressed(Ab Bandar Kya Jaane Adrak ka Swaad). But Rahman creates sheer magic with this one. Again, starts with children singing, then the zing of guitar and ends with guitar and then children giggling?(very natural. iPod is amazing for realising such stuff). In between sheer magic of singing, music and https://lyrics.
This has to be one of the best to remind
continued.
