This Year was a totally unexpected year! The movies that were supposed to be hits did not actually set the box-office on fire! E.g. Kisna, Lucky, Paheli, Shaadi No.1, Deewane Huye Paagal, etc. And movies which had came to make average business made a very good profit. E.g. Iqbal, Kya Kool Hai Hum, White Noise, Hanuman etc. I am not a trade analyst but after analyzing various factors about Bollywood movies of this year, I did the following observations:
This year people got bored of watching movies on pirated VCDs and stepped out of their homes to watch movies in theatres. That is why, theatres again flashed their House Full boards again, even after 3-4 weeks!
Multiplex culture spread widely in this year. This gave some low budget movies the platform to release their movies!
Neha Dhupia’s sentence “In the Bollywood, only Shahrukh and sex sells” was proved wrong. Many sex-related movies released this year like Sheesha, Laila, Revati, Bachke Rehna Re Baba, Sauda, Chaahat, Bad Friend etc. And they all got bombed at the box office. Even the Shahrukh Khan starrer Paheli did an average business.
This year, movies were not censored properly. Zeher, which has little sex material and violence, was rated (A) and should have been rated (U/A). Deewane Huye Paagal should had been rated (U) instead of (U/A).
Indiafm.com’s Taran Adarsh’s value became less, mainly because of his reviews. He completely changed this year. He would give rating and above to some entertaining, humorous and action-packed movie, but would give less than to a serious, art film or hard-hitting movie. I wonder why such sudden change in his behaviour!
This year I did not saw so many movies as I used to see previously because of my studies. But though, whenever I got some spare time, I utilized it for doing my favourite hobby i.e. watching movies! After carefully thinking, I have prepared my list of my 10 Best Bollywood Movies of 2005. All of you may not agree with it! Movies are arranged according to their release dates:
1. Tango Charlie
Cast: Bobby Deol, Ajay Devgan, Tanishaa, Nandana Sen, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty
Director: Mani Shankar
Release Date: March 25, 2005
Censor Certification: (U/A)
Tango Charlie showed to the viewers what the soldier in real life has to suffer. Booby Deol and Ajay Decgan’s performance was great and applauding. Along with that the movie had a great song “Ek Deewani Ladki Ne…” It did not topped the charts but I liked the song very much. Tango Charlie was a failure at the box-office as it was released during the wrong time. But I strongly advise you to watch it, if you have not watched. Its great!
2. Kaal
Cast: Vivek Oberoi, John Abraham, Esha Deol, Lara Dutta, Ajay Devgan
Director: Soham Shah
Release Date: April 29, 2005
Censor Certification: (U/A)
Kaal had beautiful direction, breathtaking cinematography, nice performances and foot-tapping songs! Most viewers did not liked it as it was bit slow and boring but I liked it very much as the movie was something different from every Friday released movie. Kaal did an average business at the box office.
3. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose-The Forgetten Hero
Cast: Sachin Khedekar, Rajpal Yadav,
Director: Shyam Benegal
Release Date: May 13, 2005
Censor Certification: (U)
This movie had the best direction and cinematography than any other movie of 2005! It was coupled with awesome performances and breezy songs! Netaji has always been my favourite national hero and I had read many books. But I got the detailed story about Netaji only from this movie. If the publicity would had been done properly and if movie had some famous cast, the movie would had then become a blockbuster! But it didn’t and fared very badly at the box-office.
4. Parineeta
Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Vidya Balan, Sanjay Dutt, Raima Sen
Director: Pradeep Sircar
Release Date: June 10, 2005
Censor Certification: (U/A)
This movie had very fine performances, excellent direction and mind-blowing cinematography. Every scene of this movie was unique! Shantanu Moitra’s music was simple and breezy. It had many other plus-points. This movie became a hit worldwide and also in India!
5. PAHELI
Cast: Shahrukh Khan, Rani Mukherji, Juhi Chawla, Suniel Shetty
Director: Amol Palekar
Release Date: June 24, 2005
Censor Certification: (U)
Paheli is this year’s India’s official entry to the Oscars! It had a wonderful direction and nice cinematography. SRK gave a brilliant and applauding performance. It did an average business in India. I am impatiently waiting for January 31, 2006. This is the date when we will come to know that whether Paheli has been nominated for the ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ category or no. I hope it gets selected. You hope the same too.
6. Mangal Pandey
Cast: Aamir Khan, Rani Mukherji, Amisha Patel, Toby Stephens
Director: Ketan Mehta
Release Date: August 12, 2005
Censor Certification: (U)
In Mangal Pandey, we got to see Aamir Khan on the big screen after 4 years and that too with a new look! It had a touching climax, fantastic performances, good direction and excellent songs. Some scenes in the first half like Rani being sold in a market, Aamir drinking bhaang were not necessary and they also caused a lot of controversy. But this movie watchable and excellent too! It did a mind-blowing business on the first 4 days of its release but after its collections started sliding down.
7. NO ENTRY
Cast: Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Fardeen, Lara Dutta, Esha Deol, Celina
Director: Anees Bazmee
Release Date: August 26, 2005
Censor Certification: (U/A)
This movie made the whole world laugh! In just two weeks, it made a suprising collection of 42.5 crores worldwide!! Also, it was the biggest hit of the year! Even in the tenth week in Mumbai, it was running in more than 30 theatres! Such thing was seen after so many years! It had a fresh cast, excellent performances and fine music. Those who have not seen this movie go and just now watch it!
