The biggest disadvantage of being popular is the magnitude of expectations are raised every time a product is released & if one happens to be Akshay Kumar, then the expectations are sky high because he doesn't only need to satisfy his fans but also has to ensure that his ANTI group goes on back foot, because it is that section, which will be waiting for his film to appear low then expected.
Ever since 'Tees Maar Khan' was launched, it has been in news because for the first time Farah Khan has not taken SRK, who is her mentor & has opted for Akshay Kumar to play the lead role. This was enough to give unwanted heights to the expectations from the film for which both Akshay's fans & his anti group has been waiting, which is finally over.
The film is about an international criminal Tabrez Mirza Khan (Akshay Kumar) who is most wanted but could not be caught as he escapes every time he is caught. Katrina plays his love interest & wants to be an actress. Akshay Khanna, an actor whose obsession is to win an Oscar.
Johri brothers, whose antique treasure has been captured by police, is to be transferred to another location in a non stop train, which will start from origin with treasure & enough policemen to guard it. & will stop at destination. Johri brothers want the treasure back & Akshay Kumar is assigned the job to bring it back to them.
He plans the day light robbery. How will he loot the train? Did he succeed? Were there any hiccups? What was the final result? The entire film answers these questions.
Farah Khan besides being an excellent choreographer is a director who believes in entertaining people by hook or crook & her intentions in this film are made crystal clear in the first 5 minutes of the film that she doesn't want you to believe in something called LOGIC. So please do not expect something great from the film because the film do not belong to the category of great films but it does succeed in entertaining you because it is a well made very good film.
Farah's husband Sirish Kunder has taken lots of responsibilities, which includes the screenplay of the film (co-written by Ashmit Kunder) that has some funny one liners being spoken at regular intervals. The trickiest part to write was the plan to rob the treasure because it wasn't to be an action packed thriller lookalike. On the contrary the director wanted something that has action, thrills & characters that will bring smile on your faces. Fortunately this was well written, executed & performed to perfection by both the Akshays.
Like the film, writing too is not of great quality but is very good because the actors have performed so well that the flaws in the writing gets covered. There are few scenes that when read will not sound good but watching them on screen will force you to laugh because they are brilliantly performed. Example the escape of Akshay Kumar from the plane & when Akshay Kumar comes to meet Akshay Khanna to offer him the role in his film.
The first half is very racy but the speed in the second half falls that is a flaw in the writing that could have been written better but fortunately it gets over in 15 minutes & the film moves back to it's original track. The climax is handled in a very different way that opens the doors for a sequel.
To me the music of the film is just above average & out of 4 songs only title song (due to the look of it) & Sheela ki jawaani (just for Katrina's electrifying moves) manage to hold your attention. Though Wallah re Wallah was well picturised.
Dialogues by Sirish Kunder & Ashmit Kunder are very witty because they are written to make you smile throughout the film & 8 out of 10 times you do smile. Good job by them as their work is in complete sync with the film.
Photography by P.S. Vinod is of top quality. Full marks to him.
Arya Babbar as a cop with an urge to be an actor is likable as he does a passable job. Sachin Khedekar & Vija Patkar as cops are okay.
Salman Khan makes a special appearance in Wallah Re Wallah song & makes his presence felt.
Katrina Kaif confirms that she is prepared to reveal but her acting is very ordinary. Due to her roots, I don't blame her accent but the performance was not that good.
Akshay Khanna as usual gives another brilliant performance. I would personally like to see him in many more films. He is very talented & that is proved yet again.
Farah Khan has maintained a very professional approach right from the selection of the lead actor to the handling of the material, which though is a wafer thin plot but manage to hold the viewers interest, thanks to the apt writing. Well done Farah.
Akshay Kumar once again is the show stealer. The film was unthinkable without him. He carries the film on his shoulders. He is adorable throughout whether he is screaming in the film or speaking one liners, he is just brilliant.
The film is recommended to all.
