Tea. Chai. Can you imagine life in India without our daily cuppa? Nope. Neither can I. Whether it be Assam, Darjeeling or Nilgiris, tea is an integral part of the Indian psyche and we would feel lost without it.

This, of course, has led to plenty of manufacturers trying to sell and market tea in India. Brooke Bond and Tata are among the two largest players in the market, and like most households, we have been trying out and experimenting with different cups of tea until we found the one we loved.

Why Tata Tea Gold?

We had been using Brooke Bond Red Label for the longest time, and we liked its taste. As nice strong Assam tea which goes well with some milk and sugar, it is hard to beat. until I came across a packet of Tata Tea Gold. It proclaimed that it contained 15 per cent Long Leaves, or as I would assume, Darjeeling Leaves.

Now, in my house, we do not really take Darjeeling Tea as we find the taste too mild. Assam tea is normally our staple. We had also tried tea with herbal extras like Brooke Bond Nature Care and Tata Tea Life, but we still preferred the simple taste of Assam Tea.

Tata Tea Gold - Smooth and Strong

Preparing tea the same way as we did with the Red Label, we took our first sip of Tata Tea Gold. And it instantly hit us, something was different. Sure, this tasted like Assam Tea, strong and with the intense flavour, but under that base of Assam flavour came across a hint, just a few hints of Darjeeling tea. I guess the long leaves were doing their job quite well.

And this is why we loved Tata Tea Gold. It retained the traditional kadak Assam tea flavour which we all loved, and at the same time introduced a touch of smooth and light Darjeeling. Since Darjeeling tea is anyway light, the flavour does not clash with the base notes, but simply adds its only smooth top notes to it. It was perfect.

How we make tea with Tata Tea Gold

Now, a reason why we love Tata Tea Gold is because of the way we make tea in the house. If you make it differently, perhaps the flavours would be different. Here is our recipe for one cup tea.

2/3rd cup water

1/3rd cup milk

1 level spoon Tata Tea Gold

1 spoon sugar(to taste).

First, bring the water and sugar to a boil.

Then reduce / switch off the flame and pour in the Tata Tea Gold.

After that, let it sit for around 45 seconds to 1 minute.

Then, start the gas again and pour in the milk.

Let it reach a boil and simmer for 30 seconds more.

Strain, serve and enjoy!

Value for money

A 100gm packet of Tata Tea Gold costs Rs. 38 and a 250gm pack costs Rs. 104. Brooke Bond Red Label's comparable variant, Red Label Special, which also has 15 per cent Darjeeling Leaves, costs Rs. 112 for 250gm.

Verdict

For a tea that has the familiarity and strong flavour of Assam, with a hint of the lightness and smoothness of Darjeeling, Tata Tea  Gold is hard to beat.
