TISS offers the most underrated courses by students but arguably the most sought after HR courses. In fact a lot of things about TISS are paradoxical. Extremely low fees, placement at par with conventional B Schools.... Students read about Indian Society and India's Development Story along with Compensation Management, PMS and other core HR subjects.
The course has undergone quite a few changes over the years. Erstwhile called MA in PM & IR, it has been rechristened MA in HRM & LR in line with the increased importance given to HRD in management. The faculty are well accomplished in their respective fields and students often complain of being overworked.
TISS boasts of great research orientation, with students being encouraged to research on diverse areas. Another aspects that sets TISS apart from the conventional B School is the concept of Fieldwork where students work on live projects in organizations in Mumbai for 2 days a week in the first 2 sems and then in the 3rd and 4th sems, they get a whole month as a block field work placement. Through this unique model, TISSians get a taste of 4 different industries by the time they graduate. Add to it the summer internship experience and the NGO block placement and a typical TISSian works in 6 industries in 6 different companies by the time they graduate.
Placements are underplayed in TISS as we are a social science institute. There is no official placement department. The placements are completely student driven. And yet, we see all biggies on campus and the average pay hovers around the average for smaller IIMs and XLRI. No mean feat considering that TISS offers only HR as a specialization.
The student mix is what makes TISS really special. They are selected from diverse backgrounds, including Masters in international relations. Masters in Japanese, Persian and Chinese, Marine Engineers. Doctors. Professionals with 9 years experience, Investment Bankers, MBAs, etc. Hence the peer learning is immense.
The lush green campus, regular extra curriculars and the 24/7 library add to the charm of TISS. It is quite a sight to see the fog descend upon the trees in TISS at 3:00 am in winter.
Overall, if someone wants to specialize in HR, TISS is the place to be in.
