When Taste of Tibet started, it was one of the few restaurants in Bangalore that served exclusively Tibetan cuisine, unlike a host of Chinese restaurants serving only momos as starters. There are a couple of more Tibetan restaurants that have mushroomed in the city; however this I guess is one of the most popular joints, especially for the north east crowd.
Tibetan cuisine is not just about momos and it is quite different from Chinese. Tibetans use more of barley flour rather than rice, found in most Asian cuisine. In fact the staple food in Tibet consists of Tsampa(roasted barley flour) and salty, buttered tea. These are not something you will find in Taste of Tibet, come on Tsampa and buttered tea are acquired tastes, how many people in India would like salt and butter in their tea?
The menu consists of varieties of steamed and fried momos; one has chicken, beef and vegetable stuffing to choose from. A plate of momos(eight pieces) will cost anywhere between Rs 30 to 40. Shaptra is another Tibetan cuisine with a tinge of Indian curry into it. Its sliced meat or veggies with steamed bread known as tingmo. You have the regular chow mien and fried rice available. Try out the thukpa, which are noodles and meat/veggies in a soup. I also recommend their beef soup. About the beverages, they have a stock of soft drinks and colas.
The restaurant is in rest house road, on the second floor of Indo-Dubai plaza(next to Guzzlers Pub). It has simple wooden furniture, with a seating capacity of max 30 people. Once you enter, you will find a counter, with a massive photo of Dalai Lama. You place your order here and collect the food from the opposite counter. Yes! Its completely self service. There is schezwan sauce and a salad that resembles the salsa salad kept on every table. The place has very minimal decoration, just a huge poster of Tibet. One can always hear some music playing in the place, which varies from popular English tracks to some Nepali and Tibetan stuff.
The place is crowded during weekends and you might have to wait for a couple of minutes to grab your table. A meal for two there would cost approximately Rs 200. Bottom-line: Taste of Tibet serves good food at affordable rates.
