Last post in this category was in 2006 (if I am right). Ok time for a little more detail about Symbiosis, to be more specific, Symbiosis International University (SIU). But before that a bit of background about the super category (that is, B-Schools):
Lots have changed since 2006, lots. The number of candidates appearing for MBA entrance exams like CAT, SNAP, MAT, NMAT, XAT, etc has shot up like inflation in the recent past. In 2005, it was around 1.55 lacs and now it is already nearing 3 lacs for CAT alone. Average packages have zoomed in all the premier B-Schools riding on the wave of buoyant growth in economy. And also getting into one of these B-Schools is no more a competition, it’s a WAR. Now let me come to, Symbiosis in particular:
Symbiosis International University have nearly 16 institutes under its umbrella (latest being economics school). Some of the Management Institutes under SIU are:
SIBM (Symbiosis Institute of Business Management)
SCMHRD (there is a different category for this)
SIIB ((Symbiosis Institute of International Business)
SIOM, SITM, SIMC, SIMS, SCIT and more……..
I will be basically focusing on the first three given above: SIBM;
SCMHRD & SIIB [these two are in the same campus at Hinjewadi, Pune]
Though I think so you can get more info about HRD from the independent thread in this category....
Got the chance to observe these closely, so will only talk about them.
Admission Process:
SNAP (conducted mostly in 3rd week of December)
GD/PI (selected candidates are called for this)
Note: SIIB also conducts group task, written task.
Now the main concerns of anyone joining an institute (I am rating them according to my perception only and it may differ):
Academic Programs/ Course: Very Good
Infrastructure: Excellent
Faculty: Overall Good (varies from excellent to average)
Administration: Very Good
Extracurricular Activities: Excellent
Alumni Network: Very Good
And yes I know missed the most important Criteria – Placements. See all these 3 institutes offer 100% placement and they all are holding the same record for many years now. But I will also refer to one of the mails in this category that it also depends upon the student.
“Believe me there is no spoon”.
You have to work very hard once you get inside the institute, because you are now amongst the best.
Just for example, SIIB this year received 30, 000 applications and it gave GD/PI call to 1000-1100 students and finally 70-80 gets the open seat. So u can calculate the ratio for yourself.
You can’t be flunking in 6-7 subjects and expecting placement of 8 lacs pa because you know normal cliché “Academics doesn’t matter”.
Average package (last year) was in the range of 7.5-9 lacs pa. For exact figures, you can refer to respective websites.
Being in one of these Instis, you will go through hell lotta grilling in first year (assured), it makes you totally comfortable with the Corporate environment grilling. One thing for sure u will ready to get grinded in Corporate world cos once you have worked like a donkey on pres, assignments after classes (sometimes from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm). Once you settle into your specialization (Finance, HR, Marketing, SCM) in second year (it will be little bit more relaxed).
And yes one final thing:
Life@Symbi : ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope you find this review useful.

Varun
Note: No Offence intended to any of the institutes, this is an opinion based mail and opinions differ from person to person. Above order if institutes is not in the order of any ranking as such.
And yes talking of rankings, I find this one useful. So u can take a look.
