My first job as a faculty in Zee Education teaching Oracle and Unix. I envied those System Administrators. They used to hang out with the top guys of the company. Every team have their own get together party, and these guys are invited into every one of them. The top Guns of the company drop them take them to pubs and treat them to a host of spirits every weekend. what makes it worse, they have power. They know every girl in the campus.( sob sob) If I faced any problem, the blame boomerangs to my fault. Not a day went by when I didnt curse these clowns. They got away with murder.

Then one day I realized that I have to become a Systems Administrator myself. Not because of those reasons mentioned above. Its because they have less work to do and more time on their hands. ( and the reasons mentioned above , especially the girls) . Comparing the updates happening in this line to Software developers line, system admins have less to worry about. Little did I know I jumped from a frying pan into fire. Sys admins are under more pressure than anyone else. The daily backups, hardware upgrades and system problems. The last thing you need to hear is someone reporting that windows somewhere is very slow, or some MS office document is not opening, or Machine hangs. I rely on Norton Systems Works. Is it worth the money ? Of course yes. There are many reasons your machine slows down. To get down into the Fundas of this product without much confusing tech jargon.

The Causes

After you install and un-install a software, not all the files are removed when you un install. The registry still holds some entries pertaining to the un installed software. So every time you boot your machine, the registry , still containing the outdated entries, are loaded into the memory, There by resulting in your machines slow performance and boot. Some of the outdated entries even try to load into the memory on a regular cycle. Now you can fix this problem. It is easy for me and those in my line to track and fix this bug. But still , assuming it takes 15 minutes for doing it manually on a machine. One dreadful day you just have enough work on your hands and 30 users report to you that their machines are slow. Spending 15 minutes on every machine will take you ages, unless you have an assistant or a fellow sys admin.

The Diagnosis

Norton system Works actually finds and removes those outdated registry entries and shortcuts to programs. There are two ways you can deal with this. One is install this, and you can revert back to the original installation state if your machine slows down, There are options provided with this. Two, you can run these tools from the CD or a repository, which will scan your hard disk , and windows installation and point out and further fix the problems.

Every day , users complain about machines performance and some program malfunction. Without a seconds thought I use the system Works. More than 90 % the problems are rectified. sometimes there are things beyond what System works can do. Then I would have to rake my idle grey cells and figure out where the problem could be.

The latest Version is Norton system works 2003 is compatible with all version of windows right from XP pro to windows 98. the software reseller told me it wasnt tested on windows 95, but take my word for this one, it really worked on the 95 box.
