'Mitti ke hai jo khusboo, woh kaise bhulayega' - Right.
Right. That's what this movie is, just right. A successful NRI scientist working at NASA wants to come back to India to bring his nanny to the US. Right. I have been here in the US for sometime, and I must tell you, I dream of coming back to India, and Mumbai, every single night. Every night.
The cake is the direction and script, and the icing on the cake in SRK. No ham scenes, no 'Maa-Beta' scenes, no 'desh ki mitti ka tika'. The movie is like a Black Forest Cake with cherries and chocolate sprinkles. Sweet.
Swades is not the best movie ever. It does not provoke as much emotions as Lagaan did. It is predictable to an extent. What the movie has working for itself is that it speaks of reality. Reality about the state of Indian villages. Reality about the feelings of caste system. Reality about the disparity between the progress made in the Indian metros and Indian villages. Reality about the will of certain people to make a difference. And putting reality into Hindi Cinema is not easy. But the director and the script writers have done a wonderful job creating an entertaining film, complete with melodious songs, and reality.
Performances: SRK has given his best performance so far in his career. Better than any other role he has ever done. Kishori Balal, as Kaveriamma, is very good, and believable. Gayatri Joshi looks pretty when she has to, and also when she doesn't. Credit here to the director for making an actress out of a model. The supporting cast is entertaining and everyone gives a good performance.
The songs, well, are typical Rehman songs. And typical Rehman songs are always good. The one complaint is, however, there are too many songs in the second half. There was no need of puting so many songs.
A lot more can be said about the movie, but please, even if you hate SRK, this is a must see. Watch it, and imagine what you would do if you were is SRK's shoes.
Here's to hoping the he gets awards for this role, and not Veer Zaara.
