I've booked two day trips from one of the affiliate of subbu travels(sri hari sastha tours and travels) in madurai. One trip to kodaikanal from madurai, another trip was madurai - rameshwaram. Cost me Rs 500 each(in march 2015)
They had mini bus. Bus condition was worse. Tamilnadu express bus were way better than their mini bus. In kodai trip, they had two driver. One acted as tour guide. In rameswaram trip, only one driver who was driving and acting as a tour guide. In both, they hardly trying to speak english or hindi. It was very hard to understand them. In both trip they have collected extra Rs 20 as a entry fee without any entry tickets.
Pickup from hotel starts at 6:45 am, Until 8 to 8:30. We have been stopped for morning breakfast at around 9:30 to 10 am and lunch time is at around 1.30 pm at their selected restaurants where they get their cut. At rameshwaram, they have introduced local tour guide who was collecting Rs 100 to show the temple and for saying it as a entry fee. Which is not required as we visited temple our own, without any fee. In rameswaram trip, driver was even smoking while driving.
Instead of going by this and spoiling your day with bad experience, you better take a express train or government express bus to cover both trip which is possible as a day trip from madurai.
