My review may have come in very late, and you are not very likely to catch the movie in the theatres as of now. But this movie really left an impression on me and thats why I am writing this review. The first movie was a hit, and usually the sequel to a hit isn't very impressive. But this time round, the sequel is even better than the first part. If the first movie waspidey gets his powers, and the fighting between the villain and him, this is much more than that. This movie has much more than just special effects and high speed action. And that is what makes it special. Actually I did not expect it to be good at all, but after seeing it, I was proven wrong. Here is a complete review on Spider-man 2.
Now I am giving a small summary of the basic story. What happens, is that things keep going wrong for Peter Parker. First he loses his job as a delivery boy, then his grades keep falling at the universtity and risks being failed by his professor, then he is starting to get ignored by Mary Jane, and so he is very depressed. He realizes that all this is because of him playing the role of spiderman, and saving the city.Sometime later even his Spider powers are going out of him. So he decides that he isn't going to play the role of Spiderman any more, and dumps his costume.
Meanwhile, his well wisher, Octavius (alias Doc Ock!) is experimenting with a radioactive element, so that he can obtain ultimate energy from it. Then he attaches four arms to his body, which can be controlled by his brain. This project goes horribly wrong, and his nuclear experiment risked the lives of all the civilians. So he is forbidden from using the experiment. He gets very angry, and the robotic arms slowly start controlling him, and forces him to do wrong things. This is where he becomes evil. He is actually a good person, but but becomes the villain because of a combination of powerful influences.
So the story is all about how Peter re-diescovers himself, how he gets inspired by his aunt, and how he takes back his role as Spider man, to save the city from the evil works of Doc Ock. The story is more than just action and fighting as I already mentioned. There are many other things too, like how Peter gives up Mary Jane because he feels he has more responsibilities, and his transition from Spidey to nerd to an 'inspired' Spidey. All this makes it a really good movie. There is a hint of humor everywhere, making it very enjoyable. So this movie, isn't just a fantasy action movie, it is good enough to compete against much more mature movies.
I am not a movie buff, so I don't know much of the actors' names. Peter Parker is Toby Maguire (I think). He does his role impressively. When he is a nerd, he seems to be a totally different person from when he is Spidey. He does all his roles well, as as an element of humor (when he acts like a nerd), as an inspired young man, as a guy who likes M.J, and finally, as the invincible Spiderman. Well done! The person who acts as M.J isn't a very good actor, or so it seems. She doesn't show her feelings very well in some parts, and only in a few places she acts well. The villain does his role very well. He acts as the evil Doc Ock nicely and does the part of 'a friendly scientist' also very well. Overall it is reasonably good acting by all.
The special effects are really awesome. The high speed action is so cool! I will have to tell one point; without good special effects, this movie wouldn't have been very interesting. Direction is very good, and there has been some emphasize even on very small details. For example, they have shown the complete character of Peter's boss in just a few scenes. The humor isn't loud and screaming. Its just a touch of comedy, so that the movie isn't dull.
On the whole, one can say that it is a fitting sequel to the first Spider-man installation. One main aspect that differentiates the two is that while the first part was full of action, the second movie has displayed other aspects like the human feelings, the personality of Peter, how he becomes responsible, and so on. I can't find any particular setback in this movie. It is mostly very good, and at a few places fine. I'm looking forward to the next installation, and I hope its the same actor for Spidey!
