I bought soya paneer for the first time some days back through localbanya. Brand was Soya and for 200gm it cost about Rs.55/- nearly the same as normal paneer. But there the resemblance ends.
When I opened it, I realized soya paneer is one stinky thing - it tastes fine, just like normal paneer and in bhurjis and all, it fits in perfectly.
But it has an odd smell. Not the sour smell of something gone bad - this is something peculiar. I researched later and realized that there are types of tofu or soya paneer.
Some are odourles and some have a stinky smell like blue cheese. I guess I got the second type. Both are good nutrition-wise - good proteins for the vegetarian and lactose intolerant population.
But like normal paneer, even soya paneer has a short shelf life. So you should buy it real fresh, although the pack says it can last long under refrigeration. It is still better fresh - all things are. Just for that stinky smell however, I am not going to buy it again.
