I have a huge inclination towards oriental cuisine and this is the reason why I was so excited about Soo Raa Sang, the only Korean restaurant that I know of in Bangalore. Soo Raa Sang translates to King’s Dinner Table and is run by Dr. Eom Hie Yong a very charming Korean lady.
Korean cuisine is not like the usual Thai or Chinese cuisine, the difference is not only in the taste but also the table settings and the course order. Korean cuisine is largely made up of vegetables, meat, tofu rice and noodles and sesame oil, garlic, red chilli paste, soy sauce and soybean paste are used for seasoning. There is usually a main course accompanied by many side dishes known as banchan. Kimchi, which are spicy fermented vegetables are the most integral part of any Korean meal.
Soo Raa Sang has this traditional Korean sitting arrangement with low wooden tables and cushions. They also have the western wrought iron chairs and table setting. I prefer the wooden ones, which has built in barbeque. The restaurant isn’t really big but is scattered with small things from Korea, such as the music instruments, the paper lampshades and the porcelain dolls.
You will be greeted by extremely hospitable staff and Dr. Eom Hie Yong. You will be served with jeon, a pancake with juliennes of carrot and cucumber, served with soy sauce. Not to forget the corn water that they serve, it is very refreshing and leaves an after taste of the corn. Enjoy that, and watch the flights taking off from the runway when your meal is being prepared.
The food is a visual feast. The main course is served with many side dished, which include kimchi of radish, cabbage and gherkin(the radish kimchi tastes exactly like the nepali pickle), spinach greens, sprouts, soy beans, potatoes with some very different sauce. I am a little biased when it comes to main course; I always tend to go for the stone pot rice. Served in a super hot stone pot, it has rice, vegetable, noodles, meat topped with a fried egg, it is a complete meal. The other dishes, which my friends are very fond of are marinated beef, the chilly pork, the barbeque stuff of course. There are plenty of vegetarian options too. I don’t know if there are authentic Korean desserts, however at the end of the meal you will be served with a very refreshing drink, which has flavours of cinnamon, pepper and sugar.
The restaurant is located almost at the end of Wind Tunnel Road. It is open from 11am to 11pm and does not close in the afternoons. Most dishes are priced between Rs 250 to 350. A dinner for two would cost approximately Rs 600 to 800.
